Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Binghamton, New York - Alex Binelas, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Stephen Scott all homered in the first frame, giving the Portland Sea Dogs (37-41) an 11-run first inning that started an offense showcase and lead to a 16-1 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (32-47) on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium.
Every Sea Dogs hitter in the lineup came around to score in a massive, 11 run-inning in the top of the first. Binelas and Rafaela hit back-to-back homers on consecutive pitches to bring in the first two runs. Kole Cottam drove in a run with a double, Izzy Wilson knocked in another on an RBI single, and Nick Sogard collected an RBI double of his own to make the score 7-0. Binelas pushed in his second RBI of the inning with a sacrifice fly and Scott made sure every batter scored with a three-run homer, capping off an 11-0 inning.
Portland went right back to business in the top of the second inning. Tyler Dearden walked to lead off the inning. Sogard crushed a homer to right-center, driving in two more runs, increasing the Sea Dogs lead to 13-0.
The Sea Dogs offense struck again in the top of the third inning. Scott led off the inning with a single and, one out later, Kole Cottam walked. Izzy Wilson stepped up to the plate and launched a three-run homer. It was his third of the season and boosted the Portland lead to 16-0.
Both teams were scoreless until the Rumble Ponies brought in their first run of the game in the bottom of the ninth. Wyatt Young led off with a double and Cody Bohanek singled, putting runners on the corners. Zach Ashford hit an infield single, bringing in Young, cutting the lead to 16-1. That would be all Binghamton could drive in, giving the Sea Dogs a 16-1 victory.
Brett Kennedy (2-4, 4.46 ERA) worked through 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just six hits and two walks while striking out four in his second win of the season. Alec Kisena (2-7, 6.02 ERA) collected just one out, surrendering seven runs on five hits, walking two, and striking out none in his seventh loss of the year.
The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies play the fourth game of a six-game series on Friday with a 6:35 PM first pitch. Portland sends LHP Jay Groome (3-4, 3.68 ERA) to the mound against Binghamton RHP Jose Butto (5-5, 4.24 ERA).
