Portland Sea Dogs News Release
The Sea Dogs won their third-straight game, beating the Rumble Ponies 12-4 on Wednesday. Portland started the scoring in the top of the second inning. With one out, David Hamilton blasted a solo homer to right-center. It was his seventh long ball of the year and gave Portland a 1-0 lead. Binghamton got one run back in the bottom of the second on a Wyatt Young homer, tying the game 1-1. Four runs scored for the Sea Dogs in the top of the third. Elih Marrero reached on a fielding error, Alex Binelas singled, and Ceddanne Rafaela reached on another error to load the bases. Christian Koss singled to center, scoring Marrero, regaining the lead 2-1. Tyreque Reed made it back-to-back singles, driving in Binelas and Rafaela, expanding Portland's lead to 4-1. Stephen Scott added the final run of the inning, driving in Koss with the help of another error, bringing the lead to 5-1. Both teams brought in three runs in the sixth inning. In the top half, Dearden got things started with a solo shot to right, increasing the advantage to 6-1. Nick Sogard doubled, Elih Marrero walked, and Sogard came in to score on an errant pickoff attempt, making the score 7-1. Binelas drove in Marrero with an RBI triple, giving the Sea Dogs an 8-1 lead. Portland brought home four more runs in the top of the eighth, headlined by another Dearden RBI single. The Rumble Ponies brought a run in during the bottom of the ninth, but Portland prevailed 12-4.
SCOTT'S STREAK - With two hits and a walk in last night's game, Stephen Scott has extended his on-base streak to eight games. The streak goes back to June 25, on the road against Richmond, and he has carried the streak into Binghamton. Over this span, he is 7-for-30 (.300), with six walks, six strikeouts, two RBI, and a .417 on-base percentage.
HAMILTON HOMERS - David Hamilton homered in the series opener, as well as last night against the Rumble Ponies. This is the first time that Hamilton has hit a home run in consecutive games this season. The only time he has gone deep multiple times in a shorter time span was his two-homer performance on opening day. His long ball on Monday was his first home run since June 5th, and last night's bomb brings his season total to seven.
BINELAS BREAKS THROUGH - On Wednesday, Alex Binelas had his first multi-hit game at the Double-A level. He went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a walk. One of his hits was a triple, meaning two of his three hits this season have gone for extra bases. Binelas' base on balls from last night pushes his total to nine walks through his first nine games with the Sea Dogs, posting an on-base percentage of .286 while collecting just three hits.
MULTI-HIT NIGHT - Portland had five hitters rack up multiple hits in last night's victory. Alex Binelas, Christian Koss, Tyreque Reed, Stephen Scott, and Tyler Dearden all had two hits in the 12-4 win. Portland has now had 136 multi-hit performances from Sea Dogs hitters this season. Three players also had multi-RBI games, including the team-leading three RBI from Dearden, and two from Koss and Reed.
THIS DAY IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 7, 2010 - Nate Spears went 4-for-4, reached base five teams in Portland's 11-4 win at Hadlock against New Hampshire. Spears scored four runs, cracked two doubles, and hit a two-run homer in his final at-bat. Matt Sheely cleared the bases with a three-run triple with two outs in the seventh.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brett Kennedy gets the nod for the third game of the series against Binghamton. Kennedy is coming off his shortest start in a Sea Dogs uniform, only making it through a third of an inning while allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. The righty has allowed four or more earned runs in two of his appearances, June 7 and June 24, but the five other outings have had three earned runs or less. Kennedy will take on the Rumble Ponies for the first time this season, missing the first series from April that the Sea Dogs won five games to one.
