MANCHESTER, NH - Three unanswered goals in the third period lifted the Portland Pirates over the Manchester Monarchs 5-2 in front of a crowd of 8,923 at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night.

Portland jumped on the scoreboard first with center Tim Brent's 14th goal of the season at the one-minute mark of the first period. Brent tipped in defenseman Kenny Smith's shot from the point past Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser. Right wing Simon Ferguson also assisted on the goal to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Right wing Brad Smyth evened the game, 1-1, at 2:46 of the first period with his 12th of the season. Smyth collected the puck in front of the net and tried to send a backhand past Pirates goaltender Dieter Kochan but was denied. As Kochan made the save, Smyth was pushed into the net by a Pirates player and the puck followed Smyth past the goal line to tie the game. Forward Brendan Bernakevitch and left wing Jeff Tambellini assisted the goal.

The Monarchs took the lead just five seconds after their power play ended at 6:52 of the first period. Cycling the puck at the points, defenseman Eric Werner fed the puck over to defenseman Mark Ardelan who sent a bomb in on Kochan for his fifth goal of the season. Left wing Noah Clarke also assisted on the goal that gave the Monarchs a 2-1 lead.

Right wing Corey Perry tied the game 2-2 at 13:47 of the middle frame as he picked the puck up in the right face-off circle, walked right up to the crease and sent a shot over the left shoulder of Hauser for his 12th goal of the season. Right wing Dustin Penner and center Ryan Shannon assisted on Portland's second goal of the game.

With center Connor James in the penalty box for holding, right wing Pierre Parenteau scored his fifth of the season at 5:51 of the third period. Hauser juggled Parenteau's initial shot but could not control the rebound. Parenteau backhanded the puck into the net to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead. Defenseman Jordan Smith and center Igor Pohanka assisted on Parenteau's goal.

Defenseman Aaron Rome scored his first goal of the season and the Pirates second power play goal of the game at 15:03 of the third period. Shannon sent a shot in from the top of the left face-off circle and Hauser made the pad save. Rome was on the doorstep to stuff in the rebound and give the Pirates a 4-2 lead.
