Pirates Battle Whale in Home Finale

Portland, ME - The playoff bound Portland Pirates will host the Connecticut tonight at the Cumberland County Civic Center in the regular season home finale. Puck drop is set for 7 PM for the 6th matchup between the two Eastern Conference teams. Portland wrapped up a playoff spot last night, while the Whale are in 10th in the Eastern Conference by virtue of tiebreaks with 4 other teams.

Portland clinched a playoff berth last night with a 3-1 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last night. Chris Brown scored twice and added an assist, and Evan Brophey added the other Pirates tally. The win improves the Pirates to 5-0 against Bridgeport on the year, while wrapping up their first playoff appearance since the 2010-11 season. Mark Visentin made 27 saves on 28 shots in net for Portland.

Connecticut dropped a 3-2 decision to the Albany Devils last night in Albany. Kris Newbury and Christian Thomas both scored for the Whale, Albany rallied to score the final two goals for the win. Cam Talbot had 32 saves on 35 shots in the loss in a game that saw just 5 total penalties between the two teams.

Portland eked out a 4-3 shootout victory in their last meeting with Connecticut on March 5th at the XL Center. The Pirates scored 3 goals in the first, but Connecticut tied the game with just 23 seconds left in regulation. Andy Miele would score the game winner in the 6th round of the shootout. Chad Johnson stopped 33 of 36 shots and 4 of the 6 shootout attempts for the win. The shootout victory snapped a 3 game losing streak against the Whale for the Pirates.
