Monsters End Season on High Note with Shutout Win
April 20, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
Rookie goaltender Calvin Pickard stopped 29 shots for his fifth shutout of the season as the Lake Erie Monsters blanked the Midwest Division Champion Grand Rapids Griffins 1-0 Saturday night at Quicken Loans Arena. A crowd of 14,290 was on hand for the final game of the 2012-13 season. Luke Walker scored the only goal of the game early in the second period for the Monsters, who finish the season winning six of their final seven contests. For the third consecutive season, the Monsters finish with a winning record.
After a scoreless first period that saw Pickard stop all nine shots sent his way, the Monsters broke the tie at 2:48 of the opening period when Walker fired a shot from the top of the left circle for his 12th goal of the season, beating Griffins goalie Petr Mrazek. Dean Strong and Barry Goers assisted on the only goal of the game.
The Monsters outshot the Griffins 13-6 in the third period as they preserved the one-goal lead for the win.
Pickard's first professional season comes to a close with the 29-save shutout, improving his overall record to 20-19-5. Mrazek, another first-year professional goalie, stopped 32 of 33 as his overall record falls 23-16-2 for the Griffins.
