Penguins look to make professional hockey history this weekend

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins take a 13-game regular season road winning streak to Norfolk this Friday, with a chance to put the team's name in the professional hockey history books on the line.

The Pens' current road winning streak, which dates back to April 10 of last season, is currently tied for the longest in American Hockey League history with the 1995-96 Albany River Rats and the 2002-03 Hamilton Bulldogs. The team's last road defeat came on April 9 in Binghamton, by a score of 5-2.

The AHL record is also the longest among all current North American professional leagues.

The Penguins won their final two road contests of the 2004-05 campaign, and have posted victories in the first 11 away games this season, helping the team to an 18-0-2-0 record through two months. The Penguins previous record for consecutive road victories was five, set from Oct. 27, 2000 through Nov. 26, 2000.

MARCH OF THE PENGUINS

The Penguins' streak of consecutive games from the start of the season with at least one point now stands at 20, the longest in league history.

The league record for consecutive games with at least one point overall is 31 games (25-0-6), set by the Cleveland Barons during the 1947-48 and 1948-49 seasons. The single-season mark of 27 games with at least one point is also held by the Barons, who went 21-0-6 during the 1947-48 season.

Wed., Nov. 23, PROVIDENCE BRUINS 2 @ Penguins 1 (OT)

Jonathan Sigalet netted his third goal of the season with just 38 seconds left in the extra frame to give the Bruins the overtime win last Wednesday night. Tyler Redenbach opened the scoring in the second period before Guillaume Lefebvre evened the score at 1-1 with 10:50 to play in the third. Marc-Andre Fleury faced just 15 shots on the night, while the Penguins managed just 19 against Jordan Sigalet.

Friday, Nov. 25, PENGUINS 3 @ Rochester Americans 2

The Penguins used goals from Tomas Surovy, Konstantin Koltsov and Ryan Stone to record the post-Thanksgiving victory against the Americans. Koltsov scored his first career shorthanded tally in the game, while Surovy (1+1) picked up two points. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped a season-high 36 shots for his 10th victory.

Saturday, Nov. 26, PENGUINS 4 @ Binghamton Senators 1

Dennis Bonvie picked up his first goal of the season, Tomas Surovy scored twice just 21 seconds apart, and Dany Sabourin stopped a season-high 42 shots for his eight consecutive victory. Kenny Corupe added an empty net goal to conclude the scoring.

RECORD SETTING STREAKS BY SABOURIN

Goaltender Dany Sabourin has set new Penguins records for consecutive wins (eight) and consecutive wins on the road (six) this season. The former marks were held by Sebastien Caron, who won five straight games from Oct. 22-Nov. 17, 2000, and Rich Parent, who won five consecutive on the road from Nov. 3, 2000 through Jan. 11, 2001. The team record for consecutive games unbeaten by a goaltender is eight, set by Rich Parent from Oct. 21-Nov. 18, 2001. Sabourin has tied that mark by going 8-0 from the start of this season so far.

SWIFT SUROVY

Tomas Surovy scored twice in a 21 second span last Saturday against the Binghamton Senators, establishing a new team record for fastest two consecutive goals by one player. Interestingly, he broke his own record, set just six days earlier, when he netted two goals 54 seconds apart. Prior to that, the record was 1:06 and held by Billy Tibbetts.

INDIVIDUAL LEAGUE LEADERS (all stats as of 11/28)

Marc-Andre Fleury is first with a 1.57 goals against average (19 goals/727 minutes), is first with a .939 save percentage (19 goals/312 shots) and second with 10 wins. Dany Sabourin is tied for fourth with eight wins, is tied for second with a .930 save percentage (19 goals/270 shots) and seventh with a 2.33 goals against average (19 goals/490 minutes). Daniel Carcillo is tied for ninth among rookies with 15 points (7+8) Carcillo is tied for sixth overall with a plus-11 rating and is tied for 11th with 79 penalty minutes. Noah Welch is first overall with a plus-17 rating. Ryan Lannon is tied for fourth with a plus-12 rating. Tomas Surovy is tied for fourth with a plus-12 rating and is tied for 11th in overall scoring with 23 points (13+10) and tied for sixth with 13 goals. Alain Nasreddine is tied for sixth with a plus-11 rating. Dennis Bonvie is first overall with 137 penalty minutes.
