Binghamton Senators News Release

LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators picked up three points in four games and currently occupy sixth place in the East Division.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 23RD @ ROCHESTER (4-7 L): The Sens skated out to a pair of two-goal leads in Rochester on Wednesday, but could not hold off the Amerks who scored four third period goals on their way to a 7-4 win. Binghamton winger GREGG JOHNSON scored his first two goals of the season in the game while GREG WATSON and FILIP NOVAK also scored for the Sens. WATSON'S goal was his fifth of the season, surpassing his previous career best of four set two seasons ago. JASON POMINVILLE, the American Hockey League's leading goal scorer, had four points in the game (2 goals, 2 assists). KELLY GUARD started in net for Binghamton, but was pulled in favor of JEFF GLASS after 20 minutes of play. GUARD stopped seven of 10 shots while GLASS held Rochester scoreless in the second period and stopped 27 of 31 shots in the game. Binghamton was scoreless in eight power plays while giving up two goals in five Rochester attempts.

THURSDAY, NOV. 24TH vs. SYRACUSE (4-3 OTW): Binghamton improved its record on Thanksgiving to 3-1 with a 4-3 overtime win against the Syracuse Crunch on Thursday. GRANT POTULNY and CHARLIE STEPHENS scored in the first period to give Binghamton a 2-0 lead for the second consecutive night. But only 10 seconds after STEPHENS goal made it 2-0 with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first period, Crunch winger GREG MAULDIN made the score 2-0 with his first goal of the season. After a scoreless second period, GREGG JOHNSON then scored his third goal in two games to give Binghamton a 3-2 lead. But Syracuse came back quickly again as stellar rookie GEOFF PLATT scored only 26 seconds after the JOHNSON goal to even the score. MAULDIN took a holding minor for Syracuse only 46 seconds into overtime and CHARLIE STEPHENS redirected a BRANDON BOCHENSKI blast at 1:37 of the overtime period for a Senators win. JEFF GLASS played well in goal for Binghamton and earned third star honors after stopping 37 of 40 shots. Each team received eight power plays and Binghamton converted on three while holding Syracuse scoreless.

SATURDAY, NOV. 26TH vs. WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (1-4 L): Wilkes-Barre/Scranton came into the game riding a 12-game road winning streak and without a regulation loss in 19 games (17-0-2-0). It looked as though Binghamton may spoil the Penguins perfect road record as the Sens went into the second intermission trailing 1-0 after former B-Sen DENNIS BONVIE beat JEFF GLASS on a long shot only 30 seconds after leaving the penalty box. But TOMAS SUROVY put the Pens on his back and scored back-to-back goals only 21 seconds apart to lift his team to victory. FILIP NOVAK had a point for the third straight game when he scored a power-play goal at 18:43 of the third period. The Penguins scored an empty-net goal with only 14 seconds left. JEFF GLASS earned third star honors for a second straight game after stopping 32 of 35 shots. Penguins' goalie DANY SABOURIN was first star, stopping 42 of 43 shots in the win. Binghamton held the Penguins potent power play in check, stopping all four of their opportunities. Binghamton scored in one of five chances, the first power-play goal allowed by the Penguins in six games.

SUNDAY, NOV. 27TH vs. PHILADELPHIA (2-3 OTL): Binghamton scored the game's first goal at 9:54 of the middle period when STEVE MARTINS intercepted a pass and skated in alone on Phantoms goalie MARTIN HOULE for his seventh goal of the season. The Senators had a pair of one-goal leads in the game, but Philadelphia forged a tie after both Binghamton goals. RYAN READY was able to score during a mad scramble in front of the net only 20 seconds after MARTINS' goal. Then, after GREGG JOHNSON scored his fourth goal in four games to give Binghamton back the lead, PAT KAVANAGH scored short-handed to tie the game 2-2. KAVANAGH, a former B-Sen, also had a hand on BRENT KELLY'S overtime game-winning goal as he picked up his seventh assist of the season. KELLY GUARD was sharp in net stopping 38 of 41 shots. Binghamton's penalty kill unit showed improvement as the Sens did not allow a power-play goal for a third consecutive game. Both teams were scoreless in eight power-play chances.
