Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME- The Portland Pirates, Junior Achievement and the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) are forming an alliance this winter to work with Expeditionary Learning High School students, sponsored by Maine Bank and Trust. Junior Achievement's "Company Program", will serve as the model around which the Pirates and the students from the Expeditionary Learning High School will help young people appreciate and better understand the role of business in our community.
Students will get the opportunity to work in five teams with the Pirates front office staff and learn their roles and responsibility inside the Pirates organization. They will work with a member of the Pirates staff to create operating plans in ticket sales, marketing, communications, event presentation, and finance/administration being supervised by a Pirates front office staff member and a SIFE student from their respective area. The students will work closely with their teacher and a member of the Pirates staff on a wide range of areas covering everything from ticket prices to broadcasting the game on the radio.
"The Pirates are very excited to be working with the students at the Expeditionary Learning High School on this project. We presented the first session today and are very excited about this relationship," said Pirates Managing Owner/CEO Brian Petrovek.
The project will evolve in phases as teams will be selected and business plans designed, with a board (ELOB students) approving the business plan to "sell" their game by using their own developed sales strategy. Proceeds from the sales will go back to support the Junior Achievement and the Expeditionary Learning High School program. The culmination of the project will be on January 27th, 2006 when the students actually run the Pirates game against the Springfield Falcons.
The Junior Achievement, the Portland Pirates and SIFE will be joining forces to teach students at the Expeditionary Learning High School Program the fundamentals of business and what takes place behind the scenes. The Junior Achievement Company Program, the Portland Pirates and SIFE selected the Expeditionary Learning High School largely in part due to the school's mission and emphasis on high achievement through active learning, character growth, and team work. The Pirates program began in the classroom today, November 28, 2005. There will be a week long intensive learning period, where the Pirates staff will be in the classroom instructing students on the business aspects of the Pirates organization. All accredited media are invited to attend.
