Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Wings will host the Syracuse Chiefs - featuring All-Star shortstop Trea Turner and Aquinas graduate Chris Bostick - Thursday and Friday nights at 7:05 p.m. Complete promotions details below....

Logan Darnell took the mound for Rochester in his 15th start of the season. The last time that he faced Pawtucket was on May 8 when he obtained a win after throwing seven innings. Darnell faced Roenis Elias of the Red Sox...

Pawtucket took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Ryan Court hit a lead-off single, and Rusney Castillo brought them both home with a home run over the left field wall. The home run is Castillo's second of the season. Despite the early set-back, Darnell regained his focus and the Red Wings got the next three outs.

In the bottom of the second inning with one out, Adam Brett Walker notched his eleventh double of the season, and snapped his 0-for-28 hitting slump against Pawtucket. Buck Britton grounded out during the next at-bat, which allowed Walker to advance to third base. With two outs, James Beresford hit a grounder straight to Elias who was able to make the easy play at first base for the third out, stranding Walker on third base.

The top of the third inning started off with a single by Ryan Hanigan. The single was followed by a remarkable fielder's choice play by Rochester; Tommy Field dove for the grounder, which rolled behind second base, and while lying on the ground Field back-hand tossed the ball to Wilfredo Tovar in time for the out at second. The dynamic defense wasn't done yet for the inning; the previous play was followed by an exciting outfield catch by Logan Schafer in center field for the second out of the inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, Schafer was walked with one out. Elias attempted to pick Schafer at first base, and Schafer found himself caught in a pickle. Despite the odds, he managed to maneuver around second baseman Ryan Court in order to avoid the tag and return to first base safely much to Pawtucket's disbelief. Field belted out a hit during the next at-bat, which landed near the right field foul line, earning him a ground rule double. Rochester was in good position to score with one out and runners on second and third base. Carlos Paulino hit a flyout to left field, and Schafer was able to tag up and cross home plate giving the Red Wings their first run of the game. Consequently, Miguel Sano was walked, and with runners on first and second Jorge Polanco popped out to second base for the third out of the inning. Heading into the top of the fourth inning, Rochester trailed Pawtucket, 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, with one out Tovar dove in order to stop a grounder, tossed the ball to Field for the out at second base, and Field threw the ball to Beresford for the double play. Rochester's defense proved to be strong through four innings.

To start off the bottom of the fourth inning, Walker secured his second hit of the game with a flyball that dropped short in center field. Britton hit a grounder during the next at-bat, and the Red Sox threw out Walker at second base, but Britton's speed enabled him to beat out the throw at first base and escape the double play. However, Britton was thrown out soon thereafter during his stolen base attempt. Beresford grounded out for the third out of the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning with two outs, Sano was poised to catch a high popout; however, the ball bounced off of the top of his head but managed to land in Beresford's glove to make for a crazy end of the inning and third out.

The Red Wings struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a walk and a fielder's choice play that did not result in an out, Field hit a sacrifice bunt that enabled Tovar and Schafer to move to second and third base. Paulino hit a RBI grounder that allowed Tovar to cross the plate for the tying run of the game.

The Red Sox re-took the lead in the top of the sixth, when a two-out single by Chris Dominguez made the score 3-2 Pawtucket. Darnell was lifted in favor of Sean Burnett after the hit, having allowed nine hits over 5.2 innings pitched. Darnell (8-6) allowed three runs, two walks one home run and one strikeout. He threw 105 pitches, 63 for strikes.

Darnell's outing marked the 51st straight game that a Red Wings starter pitched at least five innings; the team's record in those games is now 33-18

In the bottom of the seventh, Chandler Sheperd relieved Elias. Elias (5-3) pitched six innings with three hits, two runs, three walks and three strikeouts. He threw 95 pitches, 56 for strikes.

Alex Wimmers entered the game in the top of the eighth to take over for Burnett. Wimmers found himself in a bases loaded jam with two outs after a pair of walks. Wimmers got a flyball out to leave the bases full.

Shepherd picked up his first save with three perfect relief innings.
