International League All-Star Team Announced

June 29, 2016 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League today announced the members of its 2016 All-Star Team. The squad of 30 IL standouts will take on the Pacific Coast League's best in the 29th Annual Sonic Automotive Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan, on July 13 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The matchup will be broadcast live from BB&T Ballpark on MLB Network, American Forces Network, MiLB.TV, and the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network beginning at 7:00 p.m. EST.

The 2016 International League All-Star squad is made up of 13 elected players who have received the most votes from ballots submitted by club's field managers and general managers (1/3), members of the media (1/3), and online fan voting (1/3). The elected players are joined by 17 additional All-Stars selected by the International League office. Each of the IL's fourteen clubs will be represented in Charlotte.

The League's winningest club, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, leads the way with four elected starting All-Stars. The RailRiders will be sending a pair of outfielders to Charlotte, Ben Gamel and Aaron Judge, along with catcher Gary Sanchez and starting pitcher Chad Green. The Buffalo Bisons are the IL's other team to be represented by four AllStars, with reliever Dustin Antolin and designated hitter Jesus Montero elected to the squad, to be joined by two selected pitchers in starter Drew Hutchison and reliever Ben Rowen.

The host Charlotte Knights will have a pair of selected All-Stars, including infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia as well as third baseman Matt Davidson, who will be making his third trip to the Triple-A All-Star Game and second appearance playing in front of a hometown crowd. Davidson suited up for the Pacific Coast League at the 2013 AllStar Game in Reno as a member of the Aces.

Davidson is one of three IL All-Stars returning to the Triple-A mid-summer classic, along with Montero (who appeared in the 2010 Triple-A All-Star Game with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre), and Columbus reliever Shawn Armstrong. There's also a former National League All-Star in the mix, as IL saves leader Edward Mujica of Lehigh Valley was elected to the team after having been a 2013 All-Star while pitching for St. Louis.

In addition to the RailRiders and Bisons, two other clubs boast multiple elected starters for the IL. Indianapolis will send first baseman Josh Bell and starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow to Charlotte, while Syracuse will be represented by outfielder Brian Goodwin and shortstop Trea Turner. The other elected starters for the International League include Toledo third baseman Casey McGehee and Rochester second baseman Jorge Polanco.

The International League has been victorious in six of the past seven Triple-A All-Star Games, including the last three in a row, and overall owns an 11-7 advantage over the Pacific Coast League in the eighteen years since the event changed to the current IL vs. PCL format. The winning League this season will once again earn the right to have its champion play as the "home team" at the Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game which will take place Tuesday, September 20 in Memphis, Tennessee.
