PawSox Come up Short in 3-2 Loss at Scranton
June 2, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Moosic, PA) The Pawtucket Red Sox could not cash in on a bevy of early chances and fell 3-2 in Scranton on Tuesday night in spite of Bryce Brentz's sixth home run, which brought them within a run in the eighth inning. The PawSox had a runner at second base with no outs in the first, third and sixth innings and could not score in any of those frames.
Keith Couch battled through seven innings but was charged with a tough-luck loss as the RailRiders leveled the three-game series.
Scranton scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning. Austin Romine had a pitch clip his jersey and was aboard to open the inning; with one out, Tyler Austin blasted a two-run homer to left-center that put the 'Riders in front, 2-0. Cole Figueroa then doubled and scored when Nick Noonan hit a hard grounder that deflected off of Travis Shaw's glove at first.
Jackie Bradley led off the game with a double to right field, and was in the middle of every PawSox scoring opportunity. The centerfielder - who now has a seven-game hitting streak - would not score in the first. He came up with Humberto and Quintero in scoring position and no outs in the third, but popped out to short. The Sox were unable to plate either runner.
In the sixth, Bradley singled to open the inning and moved to second base when Deven Marrero ripped a liner to right. Travis Shaw then singed to load the bases. Allen lined out to center before Brentz bounced into an inning-ending double play.
A bizarre play - again involving Bradley - ended another threat in the seventh. With two on and two outs, Bradley swung through a 1-1 pitch that popped out of Scranton catcher Austin Romine's glove. Thinking it had been a foul tip, Bradley picked up the baseball in front of the plate and was called out on batter's interference for grabbing a live ball.
The PawSox finally broke through in the eighth. Shaw laced a one-out single to left and came home when Brentz crushed a deep line drive over the centerfield wall. The Sox' third two-run homer of the series pulled Pawtucket within a run at 3-2.
But Scranton closer Jose Ramirez sent down Pawtucket in order in the ninth to earn his seventh save.
The finale of the series is scheduled for a 12:05 P.M. first pitch on Wednesday. Left-hander Brian Johnson (6-3, 2.60) is expected to start for the PawSox while the RailRiders counter with righty Bryan Mitchell (3-4, 3.20). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 11:50 A.M.
The PawSox return home on Monday, June 8th to welcome Charlotte at the beginning of a seven-game homestand. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
