Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Bill Lee -- a 1973 American League All-Star, who compiled 119 career Major League Baseball victories -- will sign autographs and meet fans at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday, June 16, courtesy of The Principal Financial Group. Lee, who was nicknamed "Spaceman" during his illustrious 14-year Major League Baseball career, spent 10 seasons with the Boston Red Sox from 1969-1978.
Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16 as the Knights host the Pawtucket Red Sox (Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) in a 7:05 p.m. game. Tuesdays at the Ballpark are "Twitter Tuesdays", courtesy of BB&T and Knights fans can expect prizes throughout the night via @KnightsBaseball on Twitter.
Originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 22nd round of the 1968 amateur draft, "Spaceman" won 17 games in three consecutive seasons from 1973 to 1975. A member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, he posted a 94-68 mark with a 3.64 ERA in 1,503.1 innings pitched with the Red Sox. He spent his final four Major League seasons with Montreal (1979-82) and went 16-10 with a 3.04 ERA in 33 games for the 95-win Expos in 1979. He was named The Sporting News National League Left Hander of the Year that season. Overall for his Major League career, Lee owns a 119-90 mark with a 3.62 ERA in 1,944.1 innings pitched.
On August 24, 2012 -- at the age of 65 -- Lee became the oldest player to start and win a professional game. The University of Southern California product started and tossed a complete game for the San Rafael Pacifics of the Independent North American League. A year later, the 66-year-old hurler played all nine positions in a game for the Pacifics.
Off-the-field, Lee has co-written four books, including "The Wrong Stuff", "The Little Red (Sox) Book", "Have Glove, Will Travel", and "Baseball Eccentrics: The Most Entertaining, Outrageous, and Unforgettable Characters in the Game".
Lee will meet and greet fans at BB&T Ballpark as part of the 2015 Principal Financial Dreams Tour, which celebrates the contributions of some of the game's most exciting and beloved players to the great game of baseball. Single-game tickets for this game, as well as all remaining games this season, are available by phone at 704-274-8282, online at www.charlotteknights.com, or in person at the BB&T Ballpark Ticket Office.
