Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs lost both games of a doubleheader against the Louisville Bats on Tuesday evening at NBT Bank Stadium. Scott McGregor threw six and two-thirds strong innings in game one, but Syracuse fell 8-5 in nine innings. The Bats held the Chiefs to just two hits in game two and won by a score of 6-1.
There was no score in game one until the bottom of the fifth inning when Syracuse (17-35) finally tallied first with two runs in the frame against right-hander Dylan Axelrod. Caleb Ramsey chopped a soft ground ball to second and beat it out for an infield single with one away in the inning. Josh Johnson followed with a single to right field to put two runners on. Two batters later, Darin Mastroianni drove a double into deep right-center field to plate two to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead.
Scott McGregor put together his sixth quality start in a row in on Tuesday. The right-hander kept Louisville scoreless until the final inning when he surrendered a two-out home run over the left-center field fence to Eugenio Suarez to end his bid for a shutout. In six and two-thirds, McGregor allowed two runs on only four hits and struck out one Louisville hitter.
Louisville (27-25) made a comeback in the top of the seventh inning against McGregor and relievers Rafael Martin and Rich Hill to take the lead. After McGregor retired the first two hitters in the inning, Suarez's solo home run cut the lead in half. The Syracuse starter surrendered a walk to Ramon Cabrera before Billy Gardner took the ball from McGregor. Martin did not retire a batter in the seventh. He allowed a single to Yorman Rodriguez to put runners on the corners. The next batter, Jose Constanza, drove the tying run in with a single to right field. Jermaine Curtis came in to pinch-hit for the pitcher and drew a walk. Irving Falu battled against Martin and drew an 11-pitch walk to force in the go-ahead run to give the Bats a 3-2 lead. Hill came in and walked in two more runs to make the score 5-2.
Syracuse, however, fought back in the bottom half of the seventh against Nate Adcock to tie the game at five. Johnson led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop Suarez. After Adcock retired the next two Chiefs, Tony Gwynn Jr. kept the game alive and shot a single into left field to plate Johnson and close the gap to 5-3. Emmanuel Burriss followed Gwynn with a single to center field to put runners on the corners. The next batter, Mark Minicozzi, dunked a line drive in the right-center field gap to plate Gwynn from third and Burriss from first to tie the game at five and send the game into extra innings.
The game remained tied until the ninth inning when the Bats broke loose for three runs against Evan Meek. The first two batters in the inning drew a walk to set up the Bats with nobody out. Hernan Iribarren laid down a bunt right back to Meek who tried to force out Sam LeCure at third. Meek overthrew Jason Martinson into left field for a throwing error to score LeCure from third. Then, Ivan De Jesus, Jr. lined a single off the glove of Josh Johnson and into right field to plate Falu to make the score 7-5. Steve Selsky drove in a run with a hard grounder to short that Burriss failed to field for an error, which allowed Iribarren to touch home plate to give Louisville the 8-5 advantage.
In game two, Louisville opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Eric Fornataro made a spot start out of the bullpen for Syracuse. With two outs, Ryan LaMarre lined a single to left field and stole second with Yorman Rodriguez at the plate. Rodriguez then lined a single into the right-field corner to drive in LaMarre from second for the first run of the game.
Louisville added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning against Manny Delcarmen. Suarez led off the inning with a single to right field. Two batters later, Yorman Rodriguez dropped down a beautiful bunt and reached base on an infield single. With two men on and one out, Delcarmen walked Chris Berset to load the bases for the Bats. Pinch-hitter Josh Satin grounded a ball to Martinson, who fired home to get the force out. Catcher Dan Butler tried to turn a double play at first but his throw sailed into right field for a throwing error, which allowed two runs to come in and score. The throwing error gave Louisville a 3-0 lead.
The Bats tacked on three more insurance runs in the top of the sixth against Erik Davis. With one out in the inning, Rodriguez walked. Berset followed with an RBI double down the left-field line to plate Rodriguez to increase the lead to four. Two batters later, Irving Falu drove home Berset with an RBI single to center field. The next batter, Iribarren, launched a double into the left-field corner, scoring Falu from first to give Louisville a 6-0 lead.
Syracuse scored its only run of game two in the final inning against Carlos Contreras. The right-hander struggled with his control in the bottom of the seventh and walked three hitters in the frame. With one out and the bases loaded, Gwynn lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Butler for the Chiefs' only run.
The Chiefs and Bats finish off this three-game set on Wednesday at 10:35 a.m. at NBT Bank Stadium. Syracuse sends Bruce Billings to the mound against Louisville starter Josh Smith to try and salvage the final game of the series.
