Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
LAST TIME OUT: The woes at PNC Field continued for the RailRiders in a 5-3 loss to Pawtucket Monday night. The PawSox overcame an 0-for-8 showing with men in scoring position by hitting three homers to account for all five runs.
PAWTUCKET POP: Mason Williams posted a 3-for-3 showing with a double, two RBIs, a walk, a steal and a run scored. Since he started his Triple-A time 1-for-10, he has hit safely in nine straight games. During his string, Williams has gone 15-for-37 (.405) with six extra-base hits and four walks (.463 OBP). A healthy portion of the Pawtucket native's success has come against his hometown team. He has hit .438/.526/.625/1.151 in four games against the PawSox, going 7-for-16 with three doubles, three RBIs and three walks.
TRIPLE THREAT: Kyle Roller smashed his first triple of 2015 on a 2-for-3 day with an RBI and a walk. The 6'1" 250-pound first baseman has 13 career three-base hits including three in 104 games with last year's RailRiders. He clobbered a career-best five with Advanced-A Tampa in 2012. He leads the league with 33 walks and ranks third with 61 strikeouts. He entered last night in a 6-for-37 (.162) funk with 16 whiffs that dipped his batting average from .273 to a season-worst .247.
GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Yesterday, infielder Cole Figueroa was named the IL's Batter of the Week for May 25-31. He led the loop with a .550 batting average, .609 OBP, .800 slugging percentage and 10 RBIs. Wednesday he set a career-high mark for hits in a game by going 5-for-5 with a homer, a double, and a career-high-tying five RBIs to help the RailRiders complete a three-game sweep at Pawtucket. He followed that by posting two hits and four RBIs in SWBÃ's 7-0 Friday win over Norfolk. He struck out just once in 20 at-bats. For the season, he paces the loop with at 21.13 plate appearances per strikeout. IndianapolisÃ' Steve Lombardozzi owns the circuit's next-best ratio at 11.86 plate appearances per strikeout.
KINGS OF THE NORTH: At 16-13, the RailRiders produced the IL North's only winning record in May. Rochester went 15-15 while the other four squads in the division logged losing records in Buffalo (11-18), Lehigh Valley (14-16), Pawtucket (12-17) and Syracuse (10-19). With this series, SWB started a string of 20 games in a row against divisional foes. The RailRiders have gone 12-10 against their IL North brothers including a 5-3 mark against Pawtucket.
ARE YOU TOO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME?: The RailRiders stand seven games below .500 at PNC Field (12-19) and seven games over on the road (14-7). The team has hit .284 on the road compared to a .244 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 105 runs in 21 games (5.0/game). At home, the squad has plated 103 runs in 31 games (3.3/game). The pitching has performed better at home (3.52 ERA) than outside of Moosic (3.88). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.667) and no IL squad has more home losses than SWB (19). In fact, only one team in all of full-season MiLB (120 teams) has more home losses than the RailRiders. The Milwaukee Brewers' Low-A affiliate, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, have struggled to the tune of a 7-22 record at Fox Cities Stadium. In the IL, only Syracuse at 8-14 (.364) has a worse home winning percentage than SWB (.387).
OFF THE RAILS: Tonight, southpaw Jose DePaula will become the RailRiders' 15th different starter of the season...Ben Gamel was ejected by home plate umpire Ben May after his eighth-inning strikeout last night...Gamel leads the RailRiders' with 17 multi-hit games and six triples, the same or more than four IL teams (Buffalo - 6; Norfolk, Pawtucket - 5; Lehigh Valley - 4)...Taylor Dugas worked a walk in his first game with this year's RailRiders...He split last season between Double-A Trenton (54 games) and SWB (57 games)...Lefty Matt Tracy (0-3) made his first Triple-A bullpen appearance of the season last night and suffered his third loss in as many overall outings...Earlier today, the Yankees made three changes to the SWB roster...DePaula was reinstated from the DL, Brendan Ryan joined the team for MLB rehab and Mark Montgomery was sent to Double-A.
