Charlotte Knights News Release
(Durham, NC) - The Charlotte Knights dropped game one of a three-game series in Durham 2-1 as Durham Bulls starter Dylan Floro came away victorious in a pitcher's duel against Knights starter Kyle Drabek in which the two hurlers combined to allow only three runs on 11 hits while each spun six strong innings.
The Knights were able to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Jason Coats drove in Matt Davidson - who had doubled earlier in the inning - with a two-out, RBI-single off of Floro, but it would prove the be the only run surrendered by the 24-year-old Californian.
Ryan Brett - who rejoined the Bulls last week after his first major-league stint with Tampa Bay - started the bottom of the frame with a lead-off double, and later came in to score on a Eugenio Velez single to tie the game at 1-1. J.P. Arencibia would then give the Bulls the 2-1 lead by scoring Velez with an RBI-single of his own.
The two-run inning proved to be enough for Floro, who scattered six hits over six innings of one-run baseball to earn his fifth win of the season.
Knights starter Kyle Drabek would be saddled with the tough-luck loss despite allowing only two runs on five hits over six strong innings. The former first-round draft pick now owns a 1-3 record despite a strong 2.36 ERA over eight games started as a Knight.
Enny Romero relived Floro to begin the seventh inning, and the flame-throwing lefty delivered three scoreless innings of two-hit ball to seal the victory for the Bulls.
Romero did get in some trouble in the top of the ninth inning when Trayce Thompson started the frame with a lead-off double, but after Jason Coats moved the would-be tying run to third base with a sacrifice bunt, Romero was able to strike out the final two batters to earn the nine-out save - his first save of the season.
The Knights and Bulls continue their three-game series on Wednesday night as RHP Chris Beck is set to take on RHP Matt Buschmann in the 7:05 p.m. matchup. The two teams will play the series finale on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. before the Knights return to Uptown Charlotte to take on the Norfolk Tides in a three-game set over the weekend at BB&T Ballpark.
