MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Eight strong innings from starting pitcher Tim Cooney paced the Memphis Redbirds to a 3-2 win over the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs in front of a season-high 12,617 fans on Independence Day at AutoZone Park in the opener of a three-game series.

Memphis has now won two in a row and move to 12-5 on Independence Day since joining the Pacific Coast League in 1998.

Cooney hurled his team-leading 10th quality start to move to 8-5, allowing two runs on six base hits over eight-plus innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked one.

PCL All-Star Stephen Piscotty (3-for-4) recorded his team-leading 30th multiple-hit game, ripped his 25th double (second-most most in the league), and drove in a pair of runs. St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong (2-for-4) added two hits in his third game with the Redbirds while rehabbing a left shoulder strain. Outfielder Tommy Pham (1-for-3) extended his hitting streak to a season-best seven straight games with a single in the sixth.

Memphis plated all three runs in third to move out to a 3-0 lead against New Orleans starter Brian Flynn (7-6). After Luis Mateo and Wong singled, Piscotty lined a two-run double down the left field line. Xavier Scruggs followed by bringing Piscotty home on a bloop single to right field.

New Orleans scored their only two runs in the next frame, which highlighted by four base hits by the Zephyrs. Both runners scored on Kyle Jensen's two-out single.

The Zephyrs threatened in the ninth, but came up short against four Memphis pitchers. With two runners on, Pedro Feliciano recorded the final two outs for his first save of the season.

Memphis and New Orleans continue their series at 6:05 pm CT on Saturday night at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Boone Whiting (0-6, 4.59) will toe the rubber against Zephyrs righty Elih Villanueva (8-5, 3.13). Another fantastic fireworks extravaganza celebrating the Salute to Armed Forces will follow the action on the field. Gates open at 5 pm.
