Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Texas Rangers have announced that C Geovany Soto will begin a rehab assignment with the Round Rock Express starting Friday, July 4 as the E-Train returns home to kick off Red, White & Blue Weekend at Dell Diamond.

Soto, who signed a contract extension last fall, played in six spring training games before having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. In 2013, he batted .245 (40-for-136) with nine homers and 22 RBI while serving as the Rangers' backup catcher.

Soto, 31, came up through the Chicago Cubs farm system after being drafted in the 11th round of the 2001 first-year player draft. Despite making his major league debut with the Cubs in 2005, he didn't earn a full-time roster spot until 2008 following a breakout 2007 campaign in which he hit .353 (136-for-385) with 26 homers and 109 RBI with Triple-A Iowa to earn Pacific Coast League Player of the Year honors.

In his first full big league season, Soto became the first rookie catcher to start for the National League in an All-Star Game, called a no-hitter, and took home the 2008 NL Rookie of the Year Award, earning 31 of 32 first-place votes. To garner such accolades, he batted .285 (141-for-494) with 23 home runs and 86 RBI for the season.

Additionally, OF Ryan Strausborger will rejoin the Express after spending the past week with Double-A Frisco. In eight games with the RoughRiders, he hit .417 (15-for-36) with a homer and four RBI. Strausborger began the season with Round Rock, and through 60 games is batting .253 (57-for-225) with 10 RBI and a team-high 14 steals.
