Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (38-49) continued their winning ways with their fourth straight win as they beat the Omaha Storm Chasers (45-43), 6-1, in the first game of a seven-game road trip on Friday night.
Behind a great start from LHP Brian Burres (1-3), the Sky Sox were able to score six runs against Omaha.
Burres struck out nine batters in five and a third innings, while allowing just one run on five hits with just two walks. It was just the eighth time in his 13-year career that Burres struck out at least nine batters. Both teams combined for 26 strikeouts in the game.
Burres retired seven consecutive batters via strikeout to tie the Sky Sox record, which was previously done by Willie Blair on July 23, 1991.
The Sky Sox struck first in the first inning when Tim Smalling smacked his third home run of the season, a solo-shot to left field. Thanks to Angelys Nina, the Sox tacked on three more runs in the third thanks to a single with an error. Colorado Springs scored a run in each the fifth and sixth, including solo-homers from Ben Paulsen and Dustin Garneau. It was Ben Paulsen's 14th of the season, while Garneau launched his first homer of the year for the Sky Sox.
The Sky Sox got two hits from Paulsen, Garneau and Nina.
Mike McClendon came in relief of Burres to toss 3.2 shutout innings in his first save of the season, allowing four hits, while striking out three.
For Omaha, John Lamb (4-8) took the loss as he threw five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, while striking out seven.
The Sky Sox and Storm Chasers will go again on Saturday when LHP Pedro Hernandez (5-4, 6.34 ERA) goes against Sugar Ray Marimon (5-4, 3.56 ERA).
