Omaha Falls 6-1 in Front of Sellout Crowd

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (45-43) offense could only muster one run in the series opener against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (39-49) in a 6-1 loss, suffering the sixth defeat in their last seven home games. The loss was in front of the first sellout crowd of 9,023 this season.

The Storm Chasers trail from the second batter of the game on, as Tim Smalling hit a solo homer off Omaha starter John Lamb. The big damage for Colorado Springs came in a three-run third inning, as a bases-loaded single by Angelys Nina combined with a Jimmy Paredes fielding error cleared the bases and built a lead Omaha could not recover from. The Sky Sox added two more homers, including one more off Lamb, after they entered the game with the second fewest long balls in the league. Lamb leads the Chasers with 14 homers allowed in 2014.

The Storm Chasers could not respond to the Sky Sox offensive surge, as they went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranded five runners at either third or second base. Colorado Springs starter Brian Burres had allowed 20 runs in 19.1 innings before the game, but held the Omaha offense to one unearned run while racking up nine strikeouts. Burres at one point struck out seven straight Omaha hitters, which matched a Colorado Springs record.

During the seven-game stretch where the Chasers have suffered six losses, Omaha has been outscored 53-23 with four of the six losses by five runs or more. Omaha is 4-8 since the start of June at Werner Park, after beginning the season 16-12 at home, and now have a 20-20 record in Papillion.

The Storm Chasers will look to rebound in the second game of the series as they send out LHP Buddy Baumann (1-1, 1.66 ERA), who will make his first career Triple-A start and first start since the 2011 season. First pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
