P-Bruins Win Home Opener

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, member of the American Hockey League, defeated the Worcester Sharks 3-1 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday night in front of a crowd of 9,440 fans. The P-Bruins got goals from Jeremy Reich, Ben Walter and Martins Karsums, while Brian Finley stopped 24 shots in net.

Reich started the scoring just 1:36 into the first period after Nate Thompson stole the puck from the Sharks in his own offensive end and dished off to Reich for a top-shelf goal, his first of the season. The goal came with the P-Bruins on the penalty kill. Walter then put Providence ahead 2-0 8:58 into the first, receiving a pass from Kris Versteeg. Walter scored his first goal in his first game of the season while Versteeg notched his third assist.

The score remained the same until Karums put home his first professional goal with 11:09 remaining in the game. The goal was assisted on by Walter and rookie Petr Kalus. The Sharks attempted to climb back nearly five minutes later with a power-play goal by Mathieu Darche with Worcester on a 5-on-3 advantage. Providence went on to win 3-1.

Finley stopped 24 of 25 shots while the Sharks' Thomas Greiss blocked 25 of 28 P-Bruins attempts. Providence went one for two on the power-play while Worcester was one of five on the man-advantage.

The Providence Bruins head to Manchester Saturday, October 14, to face the Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7:35 p.m. before returning home October 20 to face the Worcester Sharks at 7:05 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
