AHL Hershey Bears

Amazing finish gives Bears second straight win

Hershey Bears News Release

Tomas Fleischman scored the game-winning goal with less than four seconds left in the third period as the BEARS won at Hamilton 4-2.

The Bulldogs opened the game by outshooting the BEARS 16-7 in the first period, and Hamilton also scored the first two goals. Corey Locke scooted up the right wall and got around the defense to beat goaltender Freddie Cassivi at 6:28 of the first to give the ‘Dogs the lead. Ajay Baines then scored a power play goal at 14:38 when he tipped in a shot from Kyle Chipchura low on the right side. With Hamilton outshooting and outscoring the BEARS late in the first period, Jamie Hunt picked a great time to score his first professional goal. Taking a pass from Pete Vandermeer, Hunt unloaded from the top of the right circle to beat Bulldogs goaler Yann Danis low to the ice at 18:30 to cut the Hamilton lead in half. The ‘Dogs took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room after one.

The second period proved to be much more even, with both teams held scoreless. Cassivi stopped all 11 shots he faced, while his counterpart Danis did the same on 11 HERSHEY shots. HERSHEY was unsuccessful on a five-on-three with Ajay Baines and former BEARS defenseman Patrick Traverse in the penalty box, the best opportunity for HERSHEY in the middle stanza.

Needing to rally from down a goal with twenty minutes to play, Chris Bourque took a drop pass from Dave Steckel and buried his first goal of the year at 15:29 of the third. In an unbelievable play, a loose puck cleared out of the BEARS zone was misplayed by both defenseman Andre Benoit and goaltender Danis, and onto the stick of Tomas Fleischmann. With suddenly an empty net to shoot at, Fleischmann picked up a good fortune rebound and fired the puck into an empty net at 19:56. The stunned crowd at Copps Coliseum saw the BEARS escape with a 3-2 win.

Notes: The game marked the halfway point of a season-opening four-game road trip for HERSHEY, with games at Syracuse Saturday and Toronto concluding the sojourn northward. The BEARS narrowly missed being stuck in Buffalo Thursday afternoon as a freak October blizzard created whiteout conditions just as the team approached Tonawanda, NY. Only three or four inches of snow was piled on the ground of an eventual 21 as the team passed through western New York State. Coach Bruce Boudreau said in his pre-game radio interview Friday that goaltender Maxime Daigneault will play either Saturday's game in Syracuse or Sunday's tilt at Ricoh Coliseum against the Marlies. Defenseman Trevor Byrne, left wing Tomas Fleischmann and winger Pete Vandermeer made their HERSHEY debuts in the game.
