Kings Sign Bernier To Multi-Year Deal

MANCHESTER, NH - The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level contract with goaltender Jonathan Bernier, the club's first-round selection (11th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.
Bernier, 18, was the highest ranked North American Goaltender in the 2006 Draft, and he also was one of two Kings first-round draft choices (the Kings selected forward Trevor Lewis as the 17th overall choice) this past July. Lewis agreed to a three-year entry level contract with the Kings in July.
Bernier has appeared in eight regular season games this season with Lewiston of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and has a 4-3-1 record, one shutout, a 2.73 goals-against-average and a .881 save-percentage. The 5-foot-11, 177-pound native of Laval, Quebec, also played in 54 regular season games last season with Lewiston and had a 27-26-0 record, two shutouts, a 2.70 goals-against-average and a .908 save percentage. In addition, Bernier had a 2-4 record, a 2.84 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage in six playoffs games with Lewiston last season.
Bernier was selected to the 2006 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Top Prospects Game in Ottawa and was a member of Team Canada for the 2006 Under-18 World Championships. He was also a member of Team Canada for the 2005 Under-18 Junior World Cup and a member of Team Quebec for the 2004 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge.
The younger brother of right wing Marc Andre Bernier, Vancouver's second-round choice (60th overall) in the 2003 NHL Draft, Jonathan Bernier is just the second goaltender to be chosen by the Kings in the first-round of the NHL Entry Draft (the Kings selected Jamie Storr, seventh overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft).
