P-Bruins Partner With Wal-Mart and City Year

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins are partnering with Wal-Mart and City Year to help unite young people of all backgrounds to service their community. Wal-Mart has donated $25,000 to City Year, one of nine local organizations that received $25,000 grants from Wal-Mart in 2008.

The Providence Bruins and Wal-Mart have invited City Year out to the P-Bruins game on February 6 to further raise awareness of their efforts in the Providence community. Wal-Mart will be making an on-ice check presentation of the $25,000 grant to City Year prior to the game and fans will be able to visit City Year representatives on the concourse throughout the game night to learn more about the organizations efforts.

City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world.   As tutors, mentors, and role models, these idealistic leaders make a difference in the lives of children and transform schools and neighborhoods across the United States and in South Africa.  City Year's mission is to build democracy through citizen service, civic leadership, and social entrepreneurship.  City Year's vision is that one day the most commonly asked question of a 17-year-old will be: "Where are you going to do your service year?"

"We believe it's our responsibility to help sustain the programs and organizations that have the greatest impact in our customer's communities," said Christopher N. Buchanan, senior manager of public affairs, Wal-Mart. "City Year is a determined organization with a passion to mentor youth and see them grow and achieve."

This is one of nine new Wal-Mart Foundation grants totaling $225,000 to non-profits organizations in Rhode Island supporting a wide range of community and social services programs that benefit children, adults, and working families throughout the state including heating assistance, quality healthcare, after school activities, environmental initiatives, and adult literacy.   These new foundation grants are in addition to Wal-Mart's established statewide charitable giving initiatives. In 2007, Wal-Mart Stores and Sam's Club gave a total of $674,057 in cash and in-kind donations to local causes and organizations in the communities they serve in the state of Rhode Island. Through additional funds raised through stores and Clubs throughout the state, Wal-Mart contributed and raised a grand total of $1,162,690 as a result of its presence in Rhode Island.

Providence returns to action Friday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center versus the Manitoba Moose at 7:05 p.m. for Rhode Island Reds T-Shirt Night. The P-Bruins are also home Sunday at The Dunk for Amica Insurance Lip Balm Night at 4:05 p.m. against the Worcester Sharks.
