Moose earn back-to-back wins over Monsters

February 3, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose were leading by three until the latter half of the third period, when the Monsters managed to come back with two goals to make it a one-goal game in the final minutes. Despite the last period surge, the Moose were able to hold onto their lead and swept their only home series against the Monsters with a 3-2 final. Alexandre Bolduc, Dylan Yeo and Nolan Baumgartner added a goal to their resume, while Captain Mike Keane played in his 1500th professional game in front of 6130 fans at the MTS Centre.

Cory Schneider resumed his goaltending duties for the Moose, while the Monsters decided to start Jason Bacashihua at the opposite end of the ice.

Manitoba's powerplay unit made their debut at 8:18 when Nigel Williams was penalized for holding. Lake Erie managed to clear the puck twice and the Moose failed to capitalize on the man-advantage while only registering a single shot.

Seconds after the powerplay expired, five-on-five hockey paid off for the Moose when Alexandre Bolduc slapped the puck over Bacashihua to put the home team up by one.

The second period gave the Monsters their first man-advantage when Michel Ouellet was put away for slashing at 1:46, but the visitors weren't able to get passed Schneider and had only tallied a total of three shots on net.

Overlapping penalties to Guillaume Desbiens and Jason Jaffray gave the visitors a five-on-three powerplay, but the Monsters were unable to crack Manitoba's strong defence unit and still failed to calculate five shots on net.

By the end of the second period the Moose had doubled up the Monsters in shots 16-8, but would end the frame and begin the third down a man, thanks to a delay of game penalty directed to Josh Soares.

The Moose extended their lead 2:54 into the third period when Dylan Yeo took a slap shot from the point to net his first of the season, 2-1.

With Mike Vernace serving time for slashing, Nolan Baumgartner scored his second goal in as many nights against the Monster to put the Moose on top by three unanswered goals.

After two games against the Moose, the Monsters scored their first goal against the club this season when Josh Aspenlind cracked Schneider to break their goose-egg, 3-1.

Less than a minute later and with a scramble in front of the net, Nigel Williams netted a second goal for Lake Erie to inch closer, 3-2.

Aaron MacKenzie's high-sticking penalty gave the Moose an extra attacker for the final 1:30. Down a man, the Monsters broke into the Moose zone and added extra pressure in the dying minutes, but the time expired before they could net the tying goal and Manitoba earned their second consecutive win against the Lake Erie, 3-2.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Moose are back on the road for their sixth road tour of the season, starting with a game against the Providence Bruins on Friday night.
