Cashman cashes in for Penguins

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Reid Cashman's first American Hockey League goal came just at the right time. Cashman, who wears number 11, scored at 11:11 of the third period to break a 1-1 tie, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 4-1 win against the Philadelphia Phantoms at the Wachovia Spectrum on Tuesday night.

The win was the 30th on the season for the Penguins, and pulled the Pens within seven points of the East Division leading Hershey Bears. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has won three consecutive games, and seven of the team's past 10 contests.

The goal was a long time coming for Cashman, who has appeared in just 27 AHL games over parts of three seasons.

"Kind of the perfect situation. Nice to kind of get the monkey off the back, so to speak," the Red Wing, MN native said of his first tally. "It was only a matter of time playing with skilled guys like we have on this team. I just threw it at the net blind and I think it tipped off their D man and happened to go in."

Cashman took a Jeff Taffe feed at the left point during an extended shift in the Phantoms zone, and zipped a shot through traffic and by Adam Munroe for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

"We got it deep and their line did a great job of cycling down low. It was probably a 45 second shift," he said. "It just came to me at the point and I one-timed it. I just tried to get good contact on it. I did and it went in the top corner."

Coach Dan Bylsma was equally pleased with Cashman's first goal.

"It's good to see a guy like Reid get rewarded," he said. "He's been here for most of the year, but hasn't played a ton of games. He's got a couple games in a row here to get him in the mix and on the score sheet. Good for Reid, and it's great to have other guys be the go to guy in that situation."

The teams traded first period goals, with Tim Wallace banging home a puck from in close to open the scoring. Former Penguins training camp invitee Rob Siriani evened the score about a minute and a half after Wallace's goal, roofing a shot over John Curry's left shoulder from close range.

That was all of the offense until Cashman cashed in. Wallace netted his second of the night, and fifth in the past three games, when he wrapped a shot around the back of the Phantoms net and off of Munroe's pads. That gave the forward his second consectuive two-goal game - and the second multi-goal game of his AHL career.

Joey Mormina finished off the scoring with an empty net tally that travelled about 180 feet.

Curry picked up his 17th win of the season with a 21 save performance.
