P-Bruins Earn Fourth Straight Win
January 21, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins extended their winning streak to four as they defeated the Atlantic Division leading Manchester Monarchs 5-2 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 8,489 fans. The P-Bruins received goals from Kirk MacDonald, Jordan Caron, Max Sauvé, Jeremy Reich and Joe Colborne en route to Matt Dalton's fourth consecutive win.
Rookie Dalton earned his fourth consecutive start between the pipes for the P-Bruins and justified his starting position when he denied a Monarch forward on a breakaway in the opening minutes. The P-Bruins offense tested Monarchs goalie Martin Jones early and often, often picking up Jones' big rebounds. It was off a rebound that the P-Bruins struck first at the 9:36 mark. With a lot of traffic in front on Jones, Trent Whitfield and Lane MacDermid each tried to stuff the puck through Jones, but it was MacDonald who found the rebound to put the P-Bruins up 1-0. Four minutes later, Providence took a two-goal lead on the Monarchs on the power play when Zach Hamill passed the puck to Matt Bartkowski at the point, who took a slap shot on net where Caron tipped it past Jones for his fifth goal of the season. Manchester's Dwight King cut the lead to one at 15:29 when he found the back of Dalton's net. Justin Azevedo and Jake Muzzin assisted on the play.
The second period had its share of offensive opportunities, but both Providence and Manchester were held scoreless. In a period dominated by more physical play, the P-Bruins and Monarchs both delivered some big hits. Nathan McIver increased his club-leading penalty minute total to 128 when he dropped the mitts with Richard Clune in a heated exchange of rights with 5:01 to play in the frame.
Providence started the scoring early in the third frame when, in a play started by Colby Cohen, Colborne fed Sauvé with a pass on a two-on-one, who beat Jones with a beautiful shot top shelf just 48 seconds in. Caron danced around the Manchester defense and dished the puck to Reich, who beat Jones with a one-timer low in the slot at the 11:22 mark. Hamill picked up his second helper of the night on the goal. Colborne scored his tenth goal of the season just 35 seconds later to put the P-Bruins up 5-2. Jamie Arnie l and Sauvé assisted on the play. After an onslaught of penalties that sent Brian McGrattan to the locker room with a game misconduct, Jordan Smotherman to the box for unsportsmanlike conducts, Manchester's Bud Holloway scored a power play goal with 16 seconds to play in the game, assisted by Azevedo.
Dalton earned the win, blocking 26 of 28 attempts. Jones suffered the loss stopping 28 shots before being relieved by Jeff Zatkoff at 11:57 of the third period. Providence went 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
After tonight, the P-Bruins take to the road, where they have points in four straight, as the club travels to Portland for a 7 p.m. tilt on Saturday. Providence wraps up the weekend on Sunday with Manchester again for Poster Day at The Dunk at 4:05 p.m. with posters free to the first 1,000 fans in attendance.
