Amerks Snap Six-Game Skid with 2-1 Win Over Crunch

January 21, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... Rookie goaltender Jacob Markstrom posted an impressive 35-save effort as the Rochester Americans halted their season-long six-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Syracuse Crunch tonight at the War Memorial at Oncenter, thus spoiling the guaranteed win the Crunch declared earlier today. With the win, the Amerks improve to 18-22-3-2 on the season.

Mike Kostka and PJ Fenton were the goal scorers for the visiting Amerks, who won for the first time since a 4-3 victory over Lake Erie on January 4th. Markstrom, the game's first star, shined through the first two periods before finally surrendering a goal to Syracuse's Patrick Maroon six minutes into the final frame.

J.P. Levasseur made 34 stops in the losing effort for the Crunch, who have now lost seven of their last eight.

Rochester opened the scoring late in the opening period, capitalizing on the power-play after simultaneous penalties assessed to Syracuse presented the Amerks with a two-man advantage. Chris Taylor and Michal Repik helped set up Kostka, who boomed a shot past Levasseur from the point with his seventh goal of the season at 18:06. Taylor has notched assists in back-to-back games and is now just one shy from 700 in his professional career.

Fenton gave the Amerks a two-goal lead midway through the second stanza with his first goal in exactly two months, which proved to be the game-winner. After Eric Selleck's initial shot was turned away by Levasseur, Fenton scooped up the rebound while toppling over the sprawled Crunch goaltender and slid it into the empty net for just his second of the season. Jeff LoVecchio also picked up an assist on the goal at 12:08.

Markstrom was perfect through the first two periods, stopping all 23 shots to help preserve Rochester's 2-0 lead.

Maroon ended Markstrom's bid for his second shutout as he converted on his own rebound at 6:06 of the third period. Maroon, who netted the game-winning goal against Rochester last week, succeeded on his second attempt as his shot deflected off Colby Robak's stick and over the right shoulder of Markstrom for his 10th of the season.

The goal wouldn't phase Markstrom, however, who made 12 more saves to deny Syracuse's continuous comeback attempts, including making several big saves in the waning moments of the contest.

The oldest rivalry in the American Hockey League will be restored on Saturday, January 22nd as Rochester takes on the Hershey Bears at the Giant Center, home of the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross. The league's senior most cornerstone franchises will be in action starting at 7:00 p.m. The contest will be the third of four matchups between the Amerks and the Bears this season and will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
