Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - Mark Mancari extended his season long point streak to nine games with a goal and two assists to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-2 victory over the Worcester Sharks in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,639 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Igor Gongalsky scored a goal in his third straight game against Worcester, and extended his point streak to four as the Pirates record improved to 25-13-4-1. Also contributing to the offensive effort were Derek Whitmore, Dennis McCauley, and Brian Roloff with a goal each.

T.J. Trevelyan and Frazer McLaren provided the scoring for Worcester as they dropped their third straight road contest to set their record at 20-17-2-5.

Trevelyan put the Sharks on the board with his third goal in the past three games against the Pirates, to give the visitors an advantage four minutes into the game. Around four minutes later at the 8:28 mark, Whitmore beat Carter Hutton to tie it at one only to have Worcester regain the lead in 28 seconds on McLaren's first goal of the season. With just over four minutes left to go in the second period McCauley capitalized on a three-on-one breakaway, beating Hutton on a back post feed from Mancari to give the game its second tie. Early in the third the Pirates continued their recent trend of late game scoring success, as Roloff knocked home his second of the year to give Portland their first lead of the game at the 2:55 mark. With under five minutes remaining in the game, Gongalsky tipped in a rebound for a comfortable two-goal lead and Mancari sealed it on an empty-net goal with exactly one minute remaining to establish the final margin.

The Pirates out-shot the Sharks 35-22 as David Leggio improved his record on the year to 12-4-0 and Hutton dropped to 3-3-2.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from Portland: 1. Mancari, 2. Whitmore and 3. Drew Schiestel (one assist and a +3 rating).
