P-Bruins Battle Back, Fall Short in OT

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in overtime 4-3 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 7,796 fans. The P-Bruins received goals from Zach Hamill, Jamie Arniel and Jeff Penner.

The first period started off slow for both Providence and Bridgeport as the play went back and forth during the opening minutes. The Sound Tigers struck first at the 5:55 mark when Robert Figren sent a laser past Nolan Schaefer from the right circle. Mark Katic and Brett Motherwell assisted on the power play goal. Rookie Matt Bartkowski prevented a two-goal deficit for the P-Bruins halfway through the period, picking up a puck sitting on the goal line behind Schaefer, who lost it after an odd bounce. Schaefer kept the Providence deficit at one going into the locker room with a big save made through traffic in front with just over a minute to play.

Providence came out of the locker room flying and looking refreshed, however it was Bridgeport that opened the scoring for the period, beating Schaefer twice in less than a minute to go ahead by three. Rhett Rakhshani beat Schaefer up high off a pass from Jon Sim to make it 2-0 and just a minute later at the 10:14 mark, Jeremy Colliton was able to put one away in traffic. Chris Blight and Mark Katic assisted on the play. Despite the three-goal deficit, Providence kept the momentum and pressure on Kevin Poulin. The hard work paid off at 13:01 when Hamill kept digging at Poulin and was able to put the puck away for his first goal of the season. Jeremy Reich and Penner assisted on the play. Just 37 seconds later, Arniel left Poulin looking on a breakaway to make it 3-2. Lane MacDermid and Penner picked up the helpers on the play. Providence continued to apply pressure and Bridgeport's frustration surfaced at the 17:34 mark when Olivier Labelle and P-Bruins tough guy Nathan McIver got into a shoving match in front of Schaefer.

The P-Bruins found themselves on the penalty kill for much of the third period, with penalties from Joe Colborne, Cody Wild, David Ling and Penner. Providence was able to kill all four penalties and continued to pressure the Bridgeport defense. The P-Bruins got their third unanswered goal to tie the game when Ling found Penner in the low left circle, who one-timed it past a blank Poulin with just 28 seconds remaining, sending the game into overtime. Bartkowski also assisted on the play.

The play went back and forth throughout the opening minutes to the sudden-death overtime, but Tony Romano's shot at the 1:54 mark trickled through Schaefer's legs for the win. Motherwell assisted on the play.

Schaefer suffered the loss, blocking 31 of 35 attempts, while Poulin stopped 43 shots. Providence went seven for eight on the penalty kill and one for five on the power play.

After a rare Saturday off, the P-Bruins are back in action on Sunday as they travel to New Hampshire to face the Manchester Monarchs. Providence plays once more on the road in Bridgeport on Wednesday, Nov. 24 before returning home to The Dunk on Friday, Nov. 26 for Kids Hat Night against the Worcester Sharks at 7:05 p.m. The hats are free to the first 1,000 fans age 12 and under.
