B-Sens Pick Up Sweet Win Against Hershey

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators played the first game of their weekend home series on Friday night, taking on the defending Calder Cup champion and East Division rival, Hershey Bears. On the heels of a shutout victory over Syracuse on Wednesday night, the B-Sens came out fired up from the first drop of the puck, scoring early and playing intelligent hockey down the stretch to upset the Bears by the score of 4-2.

The B-Sens jumped out to an early lead at the hands of Craig Schira's second goal of the season. 3:30 into the first period, Andre Beniot sent Schira a pass in the opposing circle, where the defenseman fired a wrist shot past Hershey goaltender Dany Sabourin for the first goal of the contest.

The B-Sens would add another goal nine minutes later in the period as Erik Condra would find the back of the net on a pass from Roman Wick. Wick skated up the right wing and slid a centering feed to Condra who tried to force the puck past Sabourin's left side. The puck caromed off a Hershey defender and trickled by Sabourin to push the Binghamton lead to 2-0.

However, the B-Sens' fine play would once again be hampered by penalties. An interference call on Benoit just 30 seconds after Condra's goal allowed the Bears to answer back. With a man advantage, Hershey winger Dmitri Kugryshev was able to set up his teammate Boyd Keen for a one-timer right in front of the Binghamton net, which he slammed past Barry Brust to cut the lead to 2-1.

Goals were hard to come by for the B-Sens in the second thanks to outstanding Hershey goaltending. Sabourin proved unrelenting, turning aside all ten shots that came his way in route to a scoreless period for the B-Sens.

Conversely, Hershey managed to light the lamp with just under three minutes to go in the period. The Bears worked the puck around the slot to Kugryshev, who was able to find an open Andrew Joudrey at Binghamton hash mark. Joudrey launched a slap shot past the defenseless Brust and into the net to knot the game at 2-2.

It wouldn't be long before the B-Sens would get the better of Sabourin. 4:48 into the third period, Derek Smith grabbed the puck behind the Hershey net and feathered a pass along the boards to Colin Greening. Greening won the puck and skated towards the net, leaving the puck behind him for Bobby Butler, who sniped a slap shot clean past Sabourin to the regain the lead for the B-Sens, 3-2.

The remainder of the game belonged to Barry Brust, who provided a spark both defensively and offensively for the B-Sens. Over the final four minutes of the game, Brust made five highlight-reel glove saves to preserve the lead, the last of which he was able to turn into a Binghamton goal to seal the game. After snatching the puck out of the air with 45 seconds to play, Brust had the presence of mind to quickly drop the puck and send it into Hershey territory as they had just pulled Sabourin in a desperation attempt to score. Keller was there to receive the puck and push it ahead to a wide-open Roman Wick, who skated it in unopposed to clinch the victory for the B-Sens, with a final score of 4-2.

The B-Sens return to home ice tomorrow night as they host the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating.
