PROVIDENCE, RI - Tony Romano scored the game-winning goal 1:54 into overtime and Kevin Poulin made 43 saves as the Sound Tigers defeated the Providence Bruins 4-3 at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence. The Sound Tigers improve to 7-10-0-0 with the win. Providence falls to 7-6-2-1. Sound Tigers Head Coach Pat Bingham also earned his first win as an AHL head coach. Bingham took over head coaching duties for the Sound Tigers on Monday after Jack Capuano was named interim head coach of the New York Islanders.
For the second straight game, the Sound Tigers scored first via the power play. Wyatt Smith committed a hooking penalty early in the first period and the Sound Tigers took advantage. Robin Figren collected a pass from Mark Katic above the right faceoff circle and fired a slap shot past Bruins goaltender Nolan Schaefer. It was Figren's team-leading sixth goal of the season and the Sound Tigers had a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the game.
The Sound Tigers scored twice just 31 seconds apart in the second period to increase their lead to three. Rhett Rakhshani netted his fifth on the season on a great individual effort to give the Sound Tigers a 2-0 lead. Jon Sim fed the puck to Rakhshani as he dodged a poke check and roofed the puck over Schaefer. Jeremy Colliton made it 3-0 after collecting a rebound on a shot from Chris Blight who made his Sound Tigers debut tonight.
Providence would respond with its own pair of quick goals just three minutes later. Sound Tigers goalie Kevin Poulin made a series of fantastic saves, but was unable to stop Zach Hamill's backhand shot to his right and the lead was cut to 3-1. 37 seconds later Jamie Arniel scored on a breakaway, and heading into the third period the Sound Tigers held a 3-2 lead.
Poulin continued to make big saves down the stretch, but Providence evened the score with just 28 seconds remaning in regulation. Defenseman Jeff Penner scored his first goal of the season from the right faceoff circle to tie the game at three, setting the stage for Romano. Brett Motherwell carried the puck all the way through the neutral zone and slid the puck to Romano by the Providence blue line. Romano fired a snap shot past Schaefer for his fifth goal of the season, giving the Sound Tigers their first road victory in the month of November by the score of 4-3.
Kevin Poulin made 43 saves to earn his fourth win of the season. Nolan Schaefer made 31 saves in the losing effort. Pat Bingham earned his first win as an AHL head coach after taking over on Monday
The Sound Tigers return to action tomorrow night when they play host to the Manchester Monarchs at 7 p.m.
