Worcester Sharks News Release

MANCHESTER, NH - Highly touted Los Angeles Kings prospect Brayden Schenn picked up his first career AHL point and Brandon Kozun picked up a goal and an assist for the Monarchs as Manchester defeated Worcester 3-1 at the Verizon Wireless Center in Manchester on Friday night.

Alex Stalock made 24 saves in the losing effort and Benn Ferriero (10th) picked up the lone Sharks goal as the Sharks record falls to 7-5-1-2 (17 points).

The first period between the two clubs was bookended by Manchester controlling play. The Monarchs would strike first on the power play as defenseman Slava Voynov (4th) buried a pretty pass on a give and go with top prospect Brayden Schenn. Brandon Kozun also picked up an assist on the goal at 6:43. Worcester would start to capture the momentum midway through the period as Manchester took two penalties twenty seconds apart to give Worcester a 5-on-3 power play. Benn Ferriero (10th) would capitalize on the first of the minor penalties as he ripped one high blocker side at 10:06 with Justin Braun and Steve Zalewski grabbing the assists on the play. The Sharks had another opportunity late in the period as Tommy Wingels and Jonathan Cheechoo skated in on a 2-on-1 but were turned away by Jeff Zatkoff. The score at the end of the first was tied at 1-1 with Manchester holding the lead in shots at 12-11. Manchester began the second period on the power play as Joe Loprieno took a roughing penalty as the buzzer sounded.

Worcester was able to kill off the early power play but Manchester continued to control play in the second period. The Monarchs took the lead 3:26 into the period on a goal scored by Brandon Kozun (6th) on a rebound from inside the right circle. Tom Hickey and Justin Azevedo picked up the assists on the goal. Chances for Worcester were few and far between but Jeff Zatkoff made a sprawling save late in period as Benn Ferriero tried to lift it over Zatkoff for his second of the game but was denied. The period ended with Manchester leading 2-1 and leading in the shot category 21-18.

With a lead entering the third period, Manchester turned up their defensive play to close out the game. The Monarchs continued to suffocate any offensive life from Worcester after the Sharks failed to convert on an early power play. The Monarchs then added to their lead at 13:42 after a turnover in front of the Sharks net ended up on the stick of Marc-Andre Cliché to score his 1st goal of the season to seal the deal. Shots in the period favored Worcester 10-6.

The Sharks overall record falls to 7-5-1-2 (17pts) and road record to 4-3-1-1 (10pts)
