December 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release
WORCESTER, MA - Brian O'Neill scored the game-tying goal with an extra attacker on the ice in the final minute of the third period, sending the Monarchs to overtime and a 5-4 shootout victory over Worcester on Friday at the DCU Center.
O'Neill, who was named CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending on Dec. 21, finished the game with a goal and an assist. He now has 15 points (3 goals, 12 assists) over his last six games beginning on Dec. 13.
The win was Manchester's (21-6-1-1) fourth straight overall and first win this season in a shootout. It has won all five games this season against the Sharks (11-13-3-1).
The Sharks scored the first goal just 15 seconds into the game when Bryan Lerg beat J.F. Berube with a wrist shot.
Manchester would answer with two goals less than a minute apart. Nick Shore tied the score at 1-1 with his team-leading 16th goal of the season 50 seconds into the first. Colin Miller then scored at 1:32 with a shot from the point to make it 2-1.
Worcester would tie the score at 11:08 in the opening period on a goal from Jeremy Langlois.
Nick Ebert gave the Monarchs a 3-2 lead 7:34 into the second period when he took a drop pass from Andrew Crescenzi and buried a wrist shot.
Worcester tied the score at 3-3 in the third when Langlois picked up his second goal of the game at 4:53 in the third. Adam Burish then scored the go-ahead goal at 8:16 in the third.
With Berube pulled, O'Neill tallied the tying goal at 19:21 in the third off a feed from Shore to send the game into overtime.
Neither team scored in the seven-minute overtime period, despite Miller taking a high-sticking penalty with 1:00 left in the frame.
O'Neill and Shore both scored on their chances in the shootout, while Lerg had the only tally for Worcester.
The Monarchs return to the Verizon Wireless Arena tomorrow when they host the Bruins on Trophies Night at 3 p.m. The Stanley Cup, Red Sox World Series trophies, and Celtics championship trophies will all be in attendance.
Notes:
The Monarchs improved to 3-1-0-1 in overtime games this season. This was their first win in two shootout games. J.F. Berube made 32 saves on 36 shots for his AHL-leading 16th win of the season. He now has a 2.12 GAA and a .915 save percentage. The Monarchs are now 17-0-0-0 this season when leading after two periods. Nick Shore has at least one point in each of his last four games, with three goals and eight assists total in that span.
