Monsters Fall in Rochester 4-1
December 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
Two first period goals jumpstarted the Rochester Americans on Friday night, as Rochester (12-18-1-0) topped the Lake Erie Monsters (13-11-2-3) 4-1 at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York. Stefan Elliott scored the lone Monsters goal in the loss. The Monsters are back on the ice in Utica Saturday against the Comets; a game that begins at 7:00 p.m.
Phil Varone gave Rochester a 1-0 lead at 6:35 of the first period when he snapped a wrist shot from the inside edge of the right circle to beat Monsters goalie Roman Will. On a power play at 9:38 of the frame, Rochester's Chad Ruhwedel fired a slap shot from the left point that took a deflection over the shoulder of Will to extend the Rochester lead to 2-0. The Monsters out-shot Rochester 15-11 in the opening frame, but Rochester goalie Andrey Makarov turned away every attempt.
With Makarov continuing to be stingy in the Rochester net, Stefan Elliott eventually put the Monsters on the board with a power play goal with 28 seconds remaining in the second period. Tomas Vincour spotted Elliott open in the right circle, and Vincour whipped a perfect pass from the left boards to Elliott, who wasted no time snapping a shot past Makarov for his eighth goal of the season. Borna Rendulic also assisted on Elliott's goal.
Rochester added a pair of goals in the third period to secure the 4-1 win. Brayden Irwin scored on a five-on-three power play from in front of the net at 16:12 of the third period to give the Americans a 3-1 lead, and Joel Armia scored an empty-net goal at 17:46 of the third period to make the score 4-1.
Will stopped 22 of 25 shots in net for the Monsters; he is 2-5-1 on the season. Makarov stopped 32 of 33 Monsters shots; he is 8-9-1 for Rochester.
The Monsters visit Utica Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The game airs live on AM 1420 "ËThe Answer'.
