Bowling Green, KY - Brett Nommensen picked up on Wednesday night right where he left off on Tuesday, smashing a first-inning home run against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Bowling Green Ballpark. He also factored into the Hot Rods late rally that ultimately fell short in a 5-3 series-opening loss. The loss leaves the Hot Rods one game behind West Michigan and two games behind Lansing in the chase for the final playoff spot in the Midwest League's Eastern Division.

Nommensen's home run came with two down in the bottom of the first inning. He took a 1-0 pitch from West Michigan starter Victor Larez and launched it over the video board in right-center field, giving the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead. Dating back to his last three at-bats in the Fort Wayne series on Tuesday, Nommensen had a single, two triples, and Wednesday's home run, driving in six runs during those four consecutive at-bats.

That was all the Hot Rods could muster against Larez, who worked six innings for the win. He allowed only three more hits, walking one and striking out two along the way.

West Michigan gave Larez the lead against Hot Rods starter Aaron Dott in the third inning. Jamie Johnson smacked a one-out double to drive in the first run to tie the game at 1-1. A groundout gave the Whitecaps the lead at 2-1 before Corey Jones laced a two-out double to push the lead to 3-1.

Dott worked four innings, falling to 2-4 in the loss. He gave up three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out two more. He gave way to Alex Koronis, who worked three innings but allowed a sixth-inning run to build the Whitecaps' lead to 4-1.

In the seventh, the Hot Rods began a comeback against the West Michigan bullpen. Zach Samuels issued a one-out walk to Kyle Spraker, who stole second before Tomas Francisco struck out before the second out. Dustin Biell followed with a single to right field to plate Spraker and cut the lead to 4-2.

In the eighth, Bowling Green was back at it again, getting a one-out single from Nommensen. After a fly out to left by Ryan Wiegand, Nommensen stole second before Bennett Davis drew a walk. After a pitching change, lefty Kenny Faulk entered the game to face Mark Thomas, who promptly singled to left field to score Nommensen and cut the lead down to 4-3. Spraker followed with a walk to load the bases, but Francisco struck out to end the frame.

West Michigan added one more run in the ninth against Deivis Mavarez to extend the lead to 5-3. The Hot Rods brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning, but Nommensen grounded out on a check swing to end the game.

The series continues on a Thrifty Thursday presented by All Hit WUHU 107 and Beaver 96.7 FM at Bowling Green Ballpark. The Hot Rods will have a variety of food and drink specials for just $2 each. Kids Play Area passes are also just $2. Plus, there will be a pre-game concert by The Black Shades, the band that created to 2010 Hot Rods Theme Song. The pre-game concert begins at 5:35 PM.
