Great Lakes Loons News Release
The Great Lakes Loons worked back from a two-run deficit Monday night to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts 5-3 in front of 4,131 fans at Dow Diamond, to win their 12th series of the second half.
Trailing 3-1, the Loons pieced together four runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Designated hitter Blake Smith got the rally started with a one-out triple to left field and was driven in on Brian Cavazos-Galvez's double. In the next at-bat, catcher J.T. Wise singled on a deflection off of the pitcher's glove that sent the ball away from the in-position second baseman and into right field to score the game-tying run.
Bryant Hernandez then hit a two-run double to right field to give the Loons a lead they would not surrender, as the men on the mound tossed a final five frames of scoreless baseball. Loons starting pitcher Ryan Christenson came away with the win, allowing Lansing's three runs on five hits, before J.B. Paxson entered to pitch two innings of relief. Paxson limited the Lugnuts to one hit, fanning three and walking none to set up Loons closer Steve Ames, who was ready to continue the defensive rhythm.
"We feed off of each other," Ames said. "If one guy throws well, you want to go out and do the same. We just feed off of each other and everything seems to be going well."
Ames picked up the save, his 11th, totaling three strikeouts to no walks in his first two-inning appearance of the season. Lugnuts starter Ryan Shopshire (7-10, 5.25) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over five innings.
The Loons got out to an initial one-run lead in the first inning when Angelo Songco hit a sharp liner that stopped in the Loons bullpen to allow Nick Buss to score and to grant Songco a triple. However, the Lugnuts battled back in the fourth, scoring two runs on Kevin Ahrens' triple and another on Balbino Fuenmayor's double to center for the 3-1 lead.
The Loons (76-36) will conclude their series against Lansing on Tuesday and send RHP Josh Wall (7-5, 3.50) to the hill against the Lugnuts RHP Matt Fields (3-6, 4.27). Tuesday night is $1 Family Feast Night at Dow Diamond presented by Chemical Bank, where fans can purchase one-dollar hot dogs, 16 oz. Coke products, and ice cream sandwiches.
The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL
