MIDLAND, MI - Despite a franchise-high crowd of 6,074, the Great Lakes Loons were defeated 12-3 by the Lansing Lugnuts Tuesday night at Dow Diamond, marking the highest single-game hits (15) and runs totals allowed by the Loons all season.

Starting for the Loons was Josh Wall, who made franchise history on 7/7 by becoming the first Loon to pitch for a nine-inning complete game, and did so against the Lansing Lugnuts. A little more than a month later, Wall faced the team again, but did not find similar results.

After two hitless innings, Wall allowed two singles to lead off the third, before pitching into a sacrifice-fly that scored the first of 12 Lansing runs. The Loons responded with two runs to take the lead in the bottom of the third, but the lead was short-lived as Lansing put up five runs on Wall in the fourth.

With one out, Wall surrendered four consecutive hits and a run-scoring wild pitch to give Lansing a 5-2 lead. A two-out double to Ryan Schimpf scored the inning's final run. Wall proceeded to give up one final run in the fifth, this time it was Sean Ochinko scoring on a Balbino Fuenmayor single. Wall finished with seven runs, five earned, on nine hits over 4.2 innings for his sixth loss of the season.

Edwin Contreras and Ji-Mo Lee came in for a combined 3.1 innings, each surrendering two earned runs, before Luis Vasquez pitched a hitless ninth. Lansing starter Matt Fields (4-6) picked up the win after pitching six innings to scatter eight Loons hits for two runs. Great Lakes tacked on an extra run in the eighth on a wild pitch from Aaron Loup, but the greater damage had been done.

Though the Loons suffered their largest margin of defeat in the contest, the Loons did win the series 3-1 over Lansing, a feat with which Loons manager Juan Bustabad was well pleased.

"You know, we win three out of four and win the series, so you've got to take that," Bustabad said. "Josh Wall had a bad outing...they just started hitting him. He left up a couple of breaking balls and they started hitting the fastball. It's just one of those things."

The Loons (76-37) head to South Bend Wednesday to play the Silver Hawks, who are 1-17 against the Loons this season. RHP Matt Magill (6-2, 3.36) will start on the mound for the Loons, while LHP Mike Belfiore (1-9, 4.52) will go for the S-Hawks. The Loons will return to Dow Diamond on Wednesday, August 18; but before they do Dow Diamond will host WIOG's Lizard Fair on Saturday, August 14. Tickets for Lizard Fair can be purchased at Loons.com, WIOG.com and the Dow Diamond ticket office.

The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
