South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - Prior to Wednesday night, it had been 15 starts and about three and a half months since South Bend starter Mike Belfiore had recorded a win. However, the lefty finally broke through against the Great Lakes Loons in a 4-3 victory at Coveleski Stadium.

Belfiore (WP, 2-9) matched his season high by tossing 7.0 innings, allowing only a solo homer to Blake Smith while striking out six and walking just one. Making the performance more impressive is the fact that Belfiore shut down the Eastern Division's best team. The victory was only South Bend's second over the Loons in 19 attempts this year and fourth in the last two seasons combined.

South Bend started the scoring early when Keon Broxton was walked by Matt Magill (LP, 6-3) to lead off the first. Broxton stole second, advanced to third on a ground out by David Nick, and scored on Bobby Borchering's sacrifice fly to put South Bend up 1-0.

The Silver Hawks pushed another tally across in the fourth. Similar to the first, Nick was walked to lead off the inning and was replaced by Borchering at first on a fielder's choice. Davidson doubled to put Borchering at third, who then scored on a sacrifice fly by David Narodowski to extend South Bend's lead.

Davidson added insurance that would prove to be the difference in the sixth by cracking a two-run homer off the foul pole in left to put South Bend up 4-0. The bomb was Davidson's 16th of the season and increased his league-leading RBI total to 76.

Kevin Munson (SV, 3) relieved Belfiore with a scoreless eighth before allowing a two-run homer to Smith in the ninth. Munson walked J.T. Wise before striking out Jaime Ortiz to seal the victory. The homer by Smith represented the first runs allowed in Munson's professional career, as he started with 12.0 scoreless innings.

The Silver Hawks continue the three-game series with the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers) Thursday night at 7:00 PM. The Famous San Diego Chicken will be entertaining fans at Coveleski Stadium, while a fireworks show will follow the game. RHP Andrew Wolcott (1-2, 5.08 ERA) takes the mound for South Bend, while Great Lakes counters with RHP Allen Webster (11-7, 2.50 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
