Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Five scoreless innings from right-hander Yoervis Medina and a 2-for-5, two-RBI performance from his catcher Henry Contreras guided the Clinton LumberKings to a 7-5 win over the Burlington Bees on a steamy Wednesday night at Alliant Energy Field. Burlington scored all five runs after the fifth inning, but the Kings held on to snap a two-game losing streak.

Medina (W, 2-0) scattered four singles over his 5.0 innings, walked none and struck out six in his first home start with Clinton. The Kings backed him with an opportunistic offense that grinded out five runs against Bees' right-hander Elisaul Pimentel.

James Jones doubled to start the game and scored on an RBI groundout by Vinnie Catricala, his 60th RBI of the season. RBI singles by Tim Morris and Contreras and a sacrifice fly by Mickey Wiswall increased the lead to 4-0 in the third inning. Pimentel would allow his final run in the fourth as Daniel Carroll doubled and scored on a single to center by Gabriel Noriega.

Pimentel (L, 9-5) yielded five runs - all earned - on eight hits over 4.0 innings. The LumberKings couldn't touch Major League outfielder-turned-pitcher Brian Anderson over 2.0 innings, but they would score late against right-hander Josh Worrell.

With the lead shrunk to 5-2, the Kings scored twice more against Worrell in the seventh. Catricala lined a double to left and scored on a second infield single by Contreras. After walks to Mario Martinez and Carroll loaded the bases, an error charged to third-baseman Fernando Cruz on a bouncing ball off the bat of Noriega would get Contreras home for a 7-2 lead.

Those two runs were pivotal as Burlington scored three late runs. Deivy Batista singled home a run off right-hander Forrest Snow in the eighth, and Carlo Testa belted a two-out, two-run homer to left-center off right-hander Brandon Josselyn in the ninth. Josselyn would go on to retire Jake Kuebler on a groundout to shortstop Nick Franklin, ending the game.

Jones finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. He did see his RBI streak snapped at eight games, however. Noriega went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to reach an eight-game hitting streak, while Morris (2-for-3, run, RBI) and Contreras (2-for-5, run, 2 RBI) also had multi-hit games.

Burlington was lead by Testa, who drove in two on his 11th home run of the year and finished 2-for-5.

The LumberKings (24-20, 61-52) continue the series with Burlington (15-27, 37-74) tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Defending Midwest League Pitcher of the Week, right-hander Tom Wilhelmsen (2-0, 0.69) is slated to make his third start for Clinton.
