Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Fish certainly made it exciting.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes went into the ninth inning trailing 6-3 and looked pretty much done against the Kansas City T-Bones on Friday night.
But the Fish scored a pair to cut the lead to 6-5 and had runners at second and third with two out, but Alan Rick was called out on strikes and the Goldeyes comeback was cut short.
With the 6-5 loss, the Goldeyes fell to 15-13 on the season while Kansas City improved to 12-15. K.C. finished the game with six runs on 11 hits while the Fish managed five runs on nine hits.
After a long, overnight bus trip back to Winnipeg from Lincoln, the Goldeyes looked sluggish early in the game and fell behind quickly. Kansas City scored two in the first off starter Chris Salamida, but Salamida settled down and the Goldeyes got back into the game.
Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, the Goldeyes got back into it with two out. Price Kendall drew a walk and then Kody Kaiser hit a fastball way over the left-field wall, almost into the river.
The Fish tied it in the seventh on a long solo homer by Justin Bass, but the T-Bones picked up the eventual winning run in the eighth when Rico Washington walked, went to second on a single by Ray Sadler, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a single Brian Joynt.
The T-Bones put up two more in the ninth against a pair of Goldeyes pitchers and Kansas City appeared to have the game in the bag, but Winnipeg battled back again.
After Victor Ferrante struck out to lead off the ninth, Price Kendall doubled and then stayed at second on an infield hit by Kaiser. Wes Long doubled home Kendall and that left Long at second and Kaiser at third with one out. Luis Alen grounded out and Kaiser scored from third to make it 6-5, but Rick struck out looking and that was the end of a three hour and 32 minute game.
T-Bones starter Reid Santos (3-2, 5.21 ERA), earned the win for K.C. while Kevin Light (0-3, 4.77) suffered the loss for Winnipeg.
Andy Shipman (3.18) picked up his sixth save of the campaign for the T-Bones.
The Goldeyes and T-Bones will play Game 2 of this three-game series Saturday night at Shaw Park. Lefthander Isaac Hess (1-0, 2.57) will get the start for Winnipeg while Kansas City's starter has yet to be announced.
Game time is 6 p.m. It's Filipino Night featuring singing sensation Maria Aragon. The game can be heard live on Sports Radio 1290, beginning with Around the Association at 4:30 p.m.
