Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 8-5 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.
The Explorers scored five unanswered runs from the third through the sixth innings to build a 7-2 lead that they would never relinquish. Tied 2-2 in the top of the third, Dustin Jones led off with a single to right, stole second, and took third on a throwing error from Edwin Bellorin. Jones scored to make it 3-2 Sioux City on Derek Schermerhorn's sacrifice fly to right.
Joe Wendte, who pinch-hit after T.J. Bohn was ejected in the middle of his at bat, worked out a walk. Wendte stole second and advanced to third on another throwing error by Bellorin. Kent Sakamoto drove in Wendte with an RBI single that flared just inside the right field line.
Sioux City scratched out another run in the top of the fourth on a two-out, RBI single from Jones. The Explorers loaded the bases with no outs against reliever Gary Lee in the top of the sixth and used an RBI groundout from Mike Murphy and a sacrifice fly from Jones to move in front 7-2.
After collecting only two hits over the first seven innings, Wichita rallied for three runs against reliever Andrew Snowden in the eighth to pull within two. Edwin Bellorin and Mike Conroy hit back-to-back singles with one out and both scored on Jose Duran's triple to the fence in left-center. Eddie De La Cruz took over for Snowden and allowed a sacrifice fly to Josh Horn that made it 7-5, but De La Cruz finished the game without allowing any further runs to earn the save.
Sioux City tacked on another run in the top of the ninth on a two-out single to right-center from Javier Brito.
Wichita jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first. Horn doubled down the right field line and scored on Juan Richardson's sacrifice fly. After Sioux City scored twice in the second to take a 2-1 lead, Josh Workman and Duran engineered a double steal in a first and third situation that allowed Workman to score the tying run.
Jonathan Ellis took the loss for the Wingnuts, allowing five runs, four earned, in five innings. Ellis allowed six hits, walked five, and struck out four.
David Trahan earned the win for Sioux City. Trahan went six and one-third innings, allowing two hits, eight walks, and striking out five.
Brandon Mathes worked a perfect inning of relief for Wichita.
