Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats completed the seven-game homestand with a 6-1 record capping it off with three consecutive walk-off victories with tonight's coming courtesy of a Mike Rohde single past two diving defenders with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4 victory over the Sioux City Explorers.

It was a cold night in Gary but the RailCats managed to stay hot snagging their sixth victory in a row and improving to 15-12 thanks to yet another game-winning hit in their last at-bat. After the Explorers broke a 3-3 tie in the ninth thanks to a leadoff double by Ryan Priddy and a single by leadoff man Dustin Jones, the RailCats rallied for one more thrilling victory in front of the home faithful before heading on a six-game road trip to St. Paul and Fargo-Moorhead.

Toddric Johnson, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time this season, crushed a double over the left fielder's head to start the rally and advanced to third on a single by Mike Massaro. Lorenzo Scott came through yet again smacking a broken bat liner into leftfield to tie the game at four runs apiece. After Guerrero reached on an error, Rohde stepped up and ripped a groundball past the five-man X's infield for the game clincher.

Massaro extended his hitting streak to seven games after another impressive day at the plate as the former Oakland Athletics product collected four hits on the night improving his average to one point shy of the .300 mark. Rohde and Carrara each contributed three hits on the night as the RailCats offense pounded out 15 base knocks against Sioux City.

Brian Grening (1-1) earned the win for the RailCats after pitching 1.1 innings and allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout. Nolan Nicholson was right at home on the U. S. Steel Yard mound yet again throwing six scoreless innings before allowing three in the seventh. On the night, Nicholson gave up just six hits while walking two and striking out five over 6.2 innings. Will Krout threw an inning and surrendered two hits while striking out one.

The RailCats got things rolling in the first plating three runs on five hits against starter Ty Marotz of the Explorers. Singles by each of the first three in the ‘Cats lineup loaded the bases with nobody out, and Cristian Guerrero drove in two on a single to left. Rohde belted another single to left to drive in Carrara to give the ‘Cats a 3-0 lead.

Sioux City tied the game in the seventh to set-up the late inning heroics. Kent Sakamoto singled and Ray Serrano followed suit before a Priddy double off Nicholson allowed Sakamato to score. Krout replaced Nicholson and yielded a two-RBI single to left off the bat of Derek Schermerhorn, the first batter he faced. The righty kept the score even inducing a fly out by TJ Bohn to end the threat.

The RailCats travel to St. Paul this evening in preparation for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch against the Saints which can be heard live on 89.1 FM the Lakeshore Friday evening. LHP Carlos Rivas will be activated from the inactive list tomorrow and make his first start in a RailCats uniform, while St. Paul will counter with RHP Alberto Rolon (3-0, 1.61). The ‘Cats return home Thursday, June 16 for a 7:10 p.m. scheduled first pitch on Mardi Gras Night at U. S. Steel Yard.
