Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

LINCOLN, Neb.---The Lincoln Saltdogs tagged Captains starter Ryan DiPietro (5-1) for four runs in the first inning and Shreveport-Bossier went just 1-for-18 with men on base, falling to Lincoln 7-1 in the first game of a three-game series.

Saltdogs rightfielder Curt Smith was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and finished the game just a double shy of the cycle. Smith led off the fifth inning with his third home run of the year and then led off the seventh with a triple off Captains reliever Justin Young.

DiPietro walked Blake Gailen to lead off the bottom of the first. After retiring Gavin Dickey on a ground out, he gave up back-to-back singles to Phil Hawke and Smith, the latter of which scored Gailen with the game's first run. After walking Robbie Alcombrack, DiPietro gave up a one-run single to Pat Trettel. Third baseman Brandon Jones would sacrifice fly to left to score Smith. Alcombrack would come in to score one batter later when Joe Ramos singled to make it 4-0.

Lincoln would add one in the third on Ramos' RBI single, which scored Smith. The run was unearned, having scored with two outs after Brandon Jones was safe at first on an error by Captains shortstop Uriak Marquez, the first of his two errors in the game. Smith's fifth-inning home run made it 6-0.

Shreveport-Bossier's only run off Lincoln starter John James (4-1) came in the seventh when Robert Perry walked with the bases loaded and one out. Threatening to get back into the game, the Captains then failed to score another run in the inning, with Brian Sabatella striking out and Andres Rodriguez flying out to center.

James was lifted after seven innings and reliever Nick Schreiber threw two scoreless innings to end the game. In the ninth, he walked Perry with two outs and gave up a single to Sabatella, which extended the Shreveport-Bossier right fielder's hitting streak to 15 games. But with two on and two out, Schreiber got Rodriguez to line out to second baseman Ramos to end the game.

DiPietro lasted four innings, his shortest outing of the year, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking three. James allowed one run and six hits while walking three and striking out four in seven frames.

With the loss, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 14-13 and have lost five of their last seven games. Tomorrow night the Captains send Richard Salazar (2-1, 5.40) to the hill against Lincoln righthander Tommy Palica (2-0, 3.08). Game time from Haymarket Park in Lincoln is 7:05 p.m.
