South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Augusta, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays got four power play goals, and put up six goals total, including a natural hat trick by rookie Ben Nelson, in blanking the Augusta Lynx 6-0 at the James Brown Arena. The shut out was Davis Parley's fourth of the season.
"I really liked the way we played tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We especially looked good on our special teams all night."
In the first period South Carolina got on the board when Trent Campbell got his 17th goal of the year on the power play. The goal came at 4:54 from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Todd Griffith. Nelson got his first goal of the game, his second of the year, from Chris Chaput and Travis Morin, at 8:49. Nelson got on the board again just under two minutes later, at 10:43, from Sean Collins and Morin, another power play goal, making it 3-0 after one period of play.
The second period featured back and forth play, but neither team could score. But in the third period, however, that was not a problem. At 3:45 Nelson struck again, a natural hat trick for the former Quinnipiac star. Nelson got his third power play goal of the night, fourth goal of the season, from Morin and Sean Collins. Less than a minute later, at 4:27, O'Brien got the first even strength goal of the game, his 13th of the season, from Tim Judy and Scott Romfo. They would stretch the lead to 6-0 when Matt Scherer got his 13th goal of the year from Campbell and Griffith.
The winning goaltender was Parley who stopped all 25 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Bobby Goepfert who stopped 21 of the 26 shots he faced in 44:27 before being replaced by J.P. Levasseur, who stopped 5 of the 6 shots they faced. The Rays went 4-8 on the power play while killing off all eight short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action on Friday night when they travel to Charlotte, NC to take on the Checkers. Game time will be at 7:35 p.m.
