Condors extend winning streak and lead in playoff race
April 1, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors have won five in a row and six of their last seven games to widen their lead to four points for the 7th seed in the National Conference. Bakersfield finished the week going a perfect 3-0-0 with a win over Victoria and a two-game sweep of Utah.
The Condors are 25-36-9 on the season with 59 points, and are in third place in the Pacific Division, seventh place in the National Conference. With a four point lead in the standings over Phoenix and Stockton, the Condors take to the road to finish the regular season with games in Phoenix and Las Vegas this week.
THIS WEEK (ALL TIMES PACIFIC):
Thursday, April 3 @ Phoenix (7:11 p.m.) Friday, April 4 @ Las Vegas (7:05 p.m.) WEEK IN REVIEW (Home team in CAPS):
Friday, March 28 CONDORS 6 vs. Victoria 3 Attn: 7,513 The Condors promptly erased a two-goal deficit early in the first by reeling off four straight goals and defeated Victoria, 6-3. F Dale Reinhardt paced the attack with his first career hat trick. C Tim Konsorada sparked the rally in the first, and C Steve Slonina's goal 17 seconds into the second put the Condors in the lead for good. F Andrew Ianiero guided the offense with three assists, while G Yutaka Fukufuji made 27 saves and recorded an assist of his own to earn his 15th win of the year. Saturday, March 29 CONDORS 4 vs. Utah 3 (SO) Attn: 6,607 The Condors extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-3 shootout win over the Utah Grizzlies on Saturday. G Yutaka Fukufuji made 49 saves, and three of five in the shootout, to earn his 16th win of the year. D Jason Goulet, LW Mark Derlago and LW Brett Lutes each lit the lamp in regulation, while C Tim Konsorada, Lutes and Derlago tallied in the shootout, leading Bakersfield to the win. Two of the Condors three wins against Utah this season have come via the shootout.
Monday, March 31 CONDORS 4 vs. Utah 1 Attn: 5,581 The Condors set the physical tone from the outset and continued it all the way to a 4-1 win. Bakersfield jumped out to a two-goal lead behind tallies from F Dale Reinhardt and LW Mark Derlago in the first two periods. After Victoria scored its lone goal late in the second, Derlago and RW Chris Di Ubaldo put the game out of reach with third-period goals. G Yutaka Fukufuji stopped 46 of 47 shots, including 23 saves in the second alone, in his 17th win of the year.
THE PLAYOFF PICTURE With two games remaining in the season, the Condors need three points to secure one of the final two playoff spots in the National Conference. They lead both Phoenix (who has three games remaining, including tonight vs. Las Vegas) and Stockton (four games left, including tonight at Fresno) by four points in the standings. The points to clinch can come via Condors points gained, or points that Phoenix does not earn. For example, should Phoenix lose their game in regulation tonight, the Condors magic number would drop to one.
The eighth seed in the conference is slated to take on Las Vegas, while the West Division title (and second seed) is a three-team race between Victoria, Idaho and Alaska. The first playoff tiebreak is overall wins; the Condors have 25 wins, Stockton has 26 and Phoenix has 23.
