Chiefs Nie Named Rbk Hockey Goalie Of The Week

PRINCETON, N.J. - Johnstown's Ryan Nie is the Rbk Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Mar. 24-30.

The Nanticoke, Ontario native was 3-0-0 with a shutout, a 1.33 goals-against average and a .956 save percentage to help the Chiefs go 3-0-0 and clinch a Kelly Cup Playoff berth.

He also won the award for Oct. 22-28 after going 2-0-0 with a goals-against average of 1.88 and a save percentage of .944.

After stopping 29 shots in a 3-1 win at Wheeling on Mar. 28, the 6-foot-1 and 170-pound Nie turned aside 28 shots and added two assists in the third period in a 6-3 win against North Division leader Cincinnati on Mar. 29 before making 32 saves to record his second shutout of the season in a 5-0 win against Trenton on Mar. 30.

The 22 year old has won his last four starts with a shutout, a goals-against average of 1.71 and a save percentage of .941. Nie leads the league with 48 games and 2,764 minutes and is second with 28 wins which breaks the Chiefs record of 25 wins set by Stan "Smokey" Reddick in 1991-92 and tied by Frederic Deschenes in 2001-02.

The second year professional is 28-12-4 with two shutouts, a 2.87 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage in 48 games for the Chiefs while also playing in the American Hockey League where he has a 2.77 goals-against average and a .833 save percentage in one game with Providence.

Nie earned All-Rookie honors in the United Hockey League in 2006-07 after going 20-8-4 with seven shutouts, a league record goals-against average of 2.02 and a save percentage of .929 in 35 games with Kalamazoo.

Prior to turning professional, Nie played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League where he was 51-54-15 with five shutouts, a 2.93 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage in 130 games with Plymouth, Toronto St. Michael's and Sarnia from 2003-06.

Runners Up: Bobby Goepfert, Augusta (2-0-0, 0.96 GAA, .955 save pct.) and Mike Brodeur, Pensacola (2-0-1, 1.31 GAA, .963 save pct.).
