Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

DAYTON, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones moved to within two wins of tying the ECHL record for wins in a season during a 5-4 triumph at Dayton Tuesday night. Mathieu Aubin scored a pair of goals, while defenseman Chad Starling added a goal and an assist in the victory. Olivier Latendresse handed out four assists.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead. Defenseman Chad Starling let loose a slapshot from the top of the right circle at 11:54 to notch his second goal of the season, from Olivier Latendresse and Mathieu Aubin. Less than two minutes later, at 13:36, Aubin buried his 27th goal of the season from the high slot-letting loose a shot in the upper right corner, past the outstretched glove of netminder Jeremy Duchesne. David Desharnais centered the pass from behind the net, after taking a pass from Latendresse.

The second period saw the teams exchange goals. Dayton closed the gap with a ower play goal from Corey LeClair at 10:13. LeClair let loose a shot from the left point that eluded Cyclones goaltender Cody Rudkowsky. Cincinnati re-established its two goal edge at 13:36, when Aubin netted his second lamplighter of the night and 28th of the year from Starling. The Cyclones outshot the Bombers, 13-10, in the period.

The third period began as the Cyclones scored the first two goals, to open a 5-1 edge. Desharnais picked up his 28th goal at 1:25 from Jason Deitsch and Latendresse. A little more than a minute later, at 2:38 Deitsch collected his 13th goal of the year from Aubin and Latendresse. Dayton scored the final three goals of the game to close the gap to 5-4, as Petr Pohl (7:41), Brad Bonnello (7:53) and Greg Labenski (15:54) all scored. Dayton had a power play for the final 1:18, but could not score with the goaltender pulled and a six-on-four player edge.

The Cincinnati Cyclones are 43 games above .500, with a 54-11-5 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division-26 points ahead of second place Elmira. The win gives Cincinnati a 38-5-3 record (.859 win percentage) since December 15. Dayton is 28-31-11. The 54 wins are the most ever by the club. The victory tonight moves the club into second place on the ECHL's single season win list. The league record for wins is 56 set by Louisiana in 2001-02.

The Cyclones have 113 points on the season, tying the club with Alaska (2005-06) for third-most points in a single season. Only Louisiana (116 in 2001-02) and Texas (115 this season) have more.

By winning the North Division, the Cyclones have a bye in the play-in round of the ECHL postseason and will host the winner of the fourth seed-fifth seed, best-of-three series at the end of the regular season. Johnstown and Dayton will play in that series, only the final positions and home ice between the teams is still to be determined. The first game of the best-of-seven series that the Cyclones will play, opens at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday, April 11 at 7:30pm. The second contest (Game ‘B' will be played the next night-Saturday, April 12).

The Cyclones return to action on Friday night (April 4) with a 7pm tilt at Reading. The game will be carried on 96 Rock, as well as at www.cycloneshockey.com.
