Nailers Train for Del Monte
December 18, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV â The Wheeling Nailers announce today the acquisition of forward David Del Monte from the Toledo Storm. The first year professional is expected to be with the Nailers for this weekend's games.
The Nailers sent Kris Waltze to Toledo for Del Monte. Waltze was waived by the Reading Royals and was claimed off waivers by the Nailers who then sent Waltze to Toledo. Del Monte began this season with the Lexington Men-O-War and was picked up by Toledo after the Men-O-War waived him. Del Monte played 17 games for Lexington and had three points on two goals and one assist. With Toledo he played six games and had one goal.
Del Monte played four years at Princeton University before turning pro this season. The 23 year-old native of Orangeville, ONT had his best collegiate season in 2001-2002. In 31 games for Princeton he had nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points.
The Nailers also announce that Bobby Russell has been reassigned to the Nailers from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Russell played three games for the Penguins in this past call-up and had two goals. Russell has played 14 games for the Nailers this season and leads the team with ten goals. He also has two assists for 12 points for the Nailers this season.
"Del Monte is a talented young player that will be given plenty of opportunity to play with us. We have been playing shorthanded for the past few weeks and the addition of Del Monte will help," stated Nailers head coach John Brophy. "Getting Russell back from the American League will also give our team a boost offensively. He leads our team in goals and is the added scoring punch we need."
The Nailers play two home games this weekend. The Toledo Storm are at the Wheeling Civic Center on Friday night and the Lexington Men-O-War are in town on Saturday night. Both games begin at 7:30p.m. Saturday will be the final day for the Nailers Toys-for-Tots collection with collection bins located at the entrances of the Wheeling Civic Center. Jumping Jack the Professional Mascot will be in attendance at both games.
Call the Nailers at 234-4625 or toll free at 1-877-NAIL-TIX for ticket information.
