Smith Named to All-Star Squad

Lexington, KY- Lexington Men O' War General Manager of Hockey Operations/Head Coach Jim Wiley announced today goaltender Mike Smith has been selected to the 2003 Northern Conference ECHL All-Star team. Smith will play in the 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star game on January 21st at TECO Arena in Estero, FL. The coaches and media of the Northern Conference select the starters and the remaining roster spots. Scott Stirling from Atlantic City will be the starter for the Northern Conference. Dan Lombard of Richmond will join Smith in the back-up role.

Smith makes the roster as one of the top goaltenders in the ECHL. He currently ranks third in goals against average at 2.36. The rookie netminder has a 6-5-2 record with a .919 save percentage. His biggest moment of the season came back on October 26th in a 2-0 win over the Dayton Bombers. Smith not only became the youngest goaltender in hockey history to score a goal. He also became the first goaltender to score a goal and record a shutout for his first pro win. Smith has been recalled twice this season by the Utah Grizzlies of the AHL. The 2001 5th Round(161st Overall) NHL Draft Pick of the Dallas Stars (161st Overall) suited up once for the Grizzlies. In his AHL debut Smith stopped 37 shots in a 2-1 overtime win over Philadelphia.

The All-Star netminder will be at Rupp Arena this weekend as the Men O' War battle the high- flying offense of the Reading Royals on Friday. Saturday the Men head to Wheeling only to return on Sunday to host Johnstown Chiefs.
