Anchorage Takes Fourth Straight Shootout
December 18, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â Don Martin forced a shootout by scoring the game-tying goal with 1:48 left in regulation and Ryan Person stopped all four Fresno attempts in the extra session as the Anchorage Aces rallied for a 4-3 victory Tuesday before 3, 506 at Selland Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Fresno grabbed a 1-0 lead at 7:50 of the middle frame when Kirk DeWaele banked a centering pass off the back of Anchorage defenseman Ryan Moren's skate. Less than two minutes later, J.J. Wrobel answered for the Aces, tying the contest 1-1. With only 4.5 seconds left in the period, Glen Gulutzan set up Mike Mathers for a one-timer from between the circles as the Falcons surged back in front heading into intermission.
Fresno pushed the margin to 3-1 on a Ryan Duthie goal 9:45 into the third period, but Dean Larson, after managing to keep the puck in the offensive zone, moved to the left half-boards and flicked a perfect pass right onto the tape of Yvan Corbin, who deked two Falcon defenders and goaltender Mark Gowan before depositing his 13th of the year at 11:02. Trailing 3-2 with under two minutes left, Kimbi Daniels won a crucial draw for Anchorage and Martin walked in on Gowan, flipping home his own rebound to tie the game once again and force a shootout, the Aces' fourth in their last six games.
While Person turned aside all four Falcon shooters, Larson and Daniels beat Gowan to secure the victory, pushing Anchorage (9-17-1) into a fifth-place tie with Fresno, which dropped to 8-10-3 despite outshooting the Aces 37-25, including 30-14 over the first two periods. Anchorage returns home to face San Diego, winners of five in a row to run its record to 13-10-1 this weekend at Sullivan Arena for Friday and Saturday night games at 7:00 p.m. AST. The Aces will be adorned in their special Christmas jerseys, which will be auctioned right off the players' backs following Saturday evening's tilt.
All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
